Car said malfunction went into neutral and I was able to coast to a side road.

Nothing electrical works accept the lights on the shifter and the tail lights. Drivers side door won't even shut right.

Was following the break-in and everything. I feel gutted.

At least it will all be fixed under warranty.

These types of failures seem to be the inevitable price of the massive increase in car computerization, with their millions of lines of code working through dozens of on-board processors. Glitches like this have me seriously considering more "primitive" cars like the Miata and BRZ.

I owned a primitive BRZ prior to this and it was a piece of junk. For the same duration of both vehicles, my 228 has had maybe one problem (rattle every now and then). The BRZ on the other hand, I would have to use my two hands to count all the problems and maybe a foot too.

Road side assistance is here. We can't get it into neutral or open the tow hook in the front... They are calling another truck with dollies to get it on the truck.

Can you get the hood open to try jumping it? Might give u enough juice to get in neutral or open the trunk.

Can't get the car jumped with a booster or another car. Shop foreman at the dealership who I have known for years thinks the BST shorted similar to when you are in an accident.

Wow, what a bizarre issue. Hopefully it is not electrical gremlins that persist for a long time. Good luck.

You know I was going to say sounds like the BST cable. I've never seen one short out. At least it's an easy fix if that is the case.

I'm sorry to hear about your incident, hopefully it's gonna be a relatively fast and proper repair to get you back on the road again!

That is bizarre. Hopefully you will be on the road again soon. I didn't know what the BST cable was, until I searched it.

Definitely will especially since I couldn't find any other cars with this same exact problem. So if anyone gets it in the future hopefully they can stumble upon this thread.

What heartbreak looks like... Worth noting the guy who owned the house I broke down next to was the nicest guy ever. He brought his truck out and put his hazards on since I couldn't do anything electrical with my car and the trunk was locked. Then we just sat and chatted for a couple hours as we waited for tow truck 1 and then 2.

Well ... I can think of far, far worse places for a car to become unconscious ...

( ... as opposed to dying, because that would mean it'd be put out to pasture. Oh. Wait ... )

... like the time a Lamborghini Murcielago I'd just driven on an exotic car tour (and was riding shotgun in at the time) decided to throw a rod south of downtown Fort Worth. In the 'hood. Four of us kept guard for two hours before the flatbed showed up at dusk. After dark, who know what could have happened?

Seriously: Kudos to the homeowner there. That's big-time of him!

You should send that guy a fruit basket or something LOL. That is a class act to sit with you and "protect" with his own truck.

So the early report is that the front stabilization module malfunctioned and caused the initial chassis malfunction then the voltage in the battery dropped for the comfort access system to cause most of the rest of the car to shut down. The battery was dead by the time they got to look at it Tuesday morning. They hooked it to a temp battery to get some info.

They are over nighting a new module and battery and once those are in can do the full diagnostics of the car.

Thanks for the update OP. A bit worrying to see our cars break down freakishly like this with such a tricky electrical problem. I wonder how often this would happen to our cars 5-10 years down the road.

Yeah that was my exact thought! Oddly enough this is the first new car I have ever purchased. Could end up being a fluke and I could have 10 years of happy motoring ahead of me.

Yep, actually service was closed Monday for memorial day but sales hooked me up with a loaner. Asked if I was ok with an X3 or if I would prefer a car...opted for the car and got a '16 340i with the m-sport package.
