F22 Front Lip Development - Opinions Wanted

Hello Everyone,

My friend and I have have recently begun the process of developing a front lip for the F22 platform. A little background on us, my friend is a mechanical engineer who specializes in the automotive field with many connections in the industry. I myself come from a corporate finance background, but we are both huge car guys. We have been friends since pre-school and our love for cars has continued to grow over the years. To that end, I recently purchased a 2016 M235i and like many of you began starting mods right away.

We have been discussing the design for a front lip for the F22 platform. I currently have the LightWeight lip on my M235i and our design would be much in the same vain, i.e. simple / sturdy and clean looking.

I wanted to gather the forums thoughts on preferred materials (see poll), and any other suggestions that you may have. Obviously, this is all preliminary, but we do have the resources to make this happen if there is enough interest.

While we can't yet comment on pricing, we would try and keep this very reasonable (i.e. no carbon lips with a $1000+ price tag), but once again will be updating this thread as we receive information from our potential supplier. Obviously, carbon fiber will be more costly than say a plastic based material, so please keep that in mind as well when voting.

We appreciate your input and hopefully we can make this happen!

Mods - thank you!

How about something for us non-M Sport folks. Something simple would be great. Even if there was a replacement for the already plastic lower bar.

We are definitely have plans to support the non-m sport cars as well. Depending on the outcome of this we would like to make something similar for the 3/4 series as well!

Thanks for the feedback thus far - please keep it coming!

Thanks HighRevs11. I have been looking into a front lip since I got my car and have narrowed it down to the Lightweight lip and the Kerscher lip. I think the Lightweight lip is not quite aggressive enough, so somewhere between those two would be nice. Looking forward to your progress.

No drilling, if possible, is always my preference. I really like the look of the lightweight lip. I like how it doesn't cover any of the front parts of the car. It's nitpicky, but the outer edges of the front splitter coves on the M performance lip hides a curve on the front splitters that bothers me. The lightweight splitter would be slightly enhanced by having integrated center screw covers like the ones one the M performance lip.

Are you guys thinking of keeping it tight to the body, vertically and horizontally?

Personally I really want someone to make some front fender aero like the z06 has.

Great for track guys running a square setup and want better aero. Also people that like to hard park at the car shows.

Thanks all! Should be able to provide some more details this weekend on design. We have some samples on order for the carbon fiber as well!

I'm hoping to keep the lip from extending out past the front bumper as much as possible - would prefer it to be flush / more symmetrical from a profile view if that makes sense.

I also agree with having this really just being an add-on piece and leaving the front bumper / air ducts alone - which is one reason I do not like the M Performance front spoiler as it overlays part of the bumper. Not sure on how we will work to adhere/attach this - initial thought was to bolt it on, but if we can come up with a better solution we will look into it. I'm not sure an adhesive would really do it, given that there's not much surface area to latch on, but I will leave that to my engineer friend haha.

Once again thanks for the feedback from all those so far and look forward to more responses!

Ooooh.... the lip would take the most abuse. Yaknow, snow & ice.. and of course careless parking or speedbumps or steep inclines lol. Subtle lip would be nice.

I'm pretty sure some of the lips out there use existing holes, just not sure if that's enough hold, so they probably require more holes drilled. I haven't seen anyone try using tension clips around the back of the bumper cover to help hold it in place (in combination with the use of existing holes), but that may be an option, especially if the tension clips can be inserted into the lip such that they provide support to the leading edge. It's kind of the same idea as the M performance lips, but instead of a portion covering the front of the bumper cover, you can wrap around the back of the bumper cover so it's not visible. You could even mold the material so that it wraps around instead of using additional clips.

Thanks everyone for the input thus far. We received some samples and will be taking a deeper dive this weekend and hope to get some photos and a prototype together as soon as we can. Keep the votes/input coming!

Hi everyone - apologies for the delay. Good news in a few fronts, my good friend and business partner got married last week and he is currently on his honeymoon! We have several designs mocked up and should have a prototype to reveal in a few weeks once he returns to the country. We will most likely be offering both a subtle and an aggressive version of the front lip. We have been experimenting with a variety of materials as well that we will present once the prototype is finalized.

As always your feedback is welcome in the interim and we look forward to revealing some designs shortly!

Good to hear that. Have you already considered any pricing?

Great idea! Black or primed would be great for me. I have the M lip but wrapped it might do that again when changing colors. Carbon looks awesome but too pricey (and you could wrap carbon-style too)

Hey everyone - just an update here, we have been working behind the scenes and should have a second version of the initial prototype ready tomorrow! We are going to try and get some pictures as soon as we can for you! Also, we have been working with a local BMW dealership for R&D purposes and will be releasing some products for the 3/4/5 series as well, so stay tuned - many things in the works pricing will be announced once we set up our vendor account and begin taking preorders...I will say that we are going to be made in the USA and will be priced aggressively to get your business. I think you will all be very happy with the quality and price point!

Start working on hoods and trunks.

It will fit the m235 and the m2. Both use same part numbers.

We are completely missing CF parts for this car, and the m2.

The only hoods available are weak, and there are no trunks at all for either car.

I look forward to seeing the prototype lip designs. I too would be very interested in aftermarket hood options if you have potential to do them in the future.
