DCT or MT?
The lease on my 2013 M Sport 535i w/MT is ending in another year. I want to order, on a lease, an M2 when available and I am #2 on my dealer's M2 allocation list. I would like to order the DCT but I am concerned with how smoothly the car will operate with this transmission compared to the 6 speed MT. Also, I'm wondering if on the 6 speed MT on an M car the clutch has as little effort as on my 535i and whether the M linkage is a short throw and satisfactory experience. Thanks, in advance, for any thoughtful responses in this regard.

MT. Perhaps it will make cool lift off noises between shifts. Probably be less in maintenance costs.
I was thinking of DCT the other day driving for convenience sake, but I want the connection. If it was a ZF box despite it's awesomeness I would go without hesitation. |

I'm thinking about joining the 21st century and going with a DCT for my next car. I drove a 911s/PDK and a Audi RS5 DCT over the weekend. It really does shift fast and the rev matching noises are fun too.

I suggest you drive a vehicle with the DCT before you check that box on your M2 order if indeed that option becomes available. Like M Car Chris said, it does have a feel of its own. |

I love the feeling of working my way through the gears, working the car myself.
It's almost an art to elegantly row gears, your feet look like they're almost dancing and the only sound is the metallic click between the gates - I love that shit.

Been into manual all my life...a long time. BUT the DCT is awesome-- and I welcome it completely. MT is as it is--its all personal and the reasons some have to sell/say a real sports car has to be MT is simply more romantic than reality--especially in traffic.
Just hope both are offered--it's gotta mean more sales for both sides of the continual bar room argument --LOL. |

If BMW could come out with a non garbage 6mt then it would be nice, but the clutch has been WAY too soft since the E46 days, the actual throws are not that good either but easily fixed with a short shift kit. The throttle mapping also sucks making it difficult to have the car do what you want, intead it tries to figure out what you want instead of just doing what you ask. Had an E39 M5 for 6 years and had trouble driving the damn thing smooth. Was no problem with my E46 M3. Have driven a 235 manual as well as an M4 and F10 M5 and did not like either one. Feels old and out-dated to me. Now if they offered something like what is in the 997 GT3 RS then I'd be all over it. Drove that car perfect after not even 5 minutes in it.
I'll be DCT all the way. I actually will not buy the car if its not offered in DCT, I'll go M3.

To be clear, I am very happy with the 8AT in my car... paddle shifting is as fun as I thought it would be: the shifts are lightning fast (which is great for keeping the turbo spooled) and rev-matching makes up-/down-shifts super smooth (and sounds awesome), and it's so easy to use on track that it really allows you to fully focus on your line and car control. All that, plus there's always the capability to just leave it in full auto mode for when you're stuck in traffic. Nothing to complain about, really; in a clinical way, the modern 8AT and DCT are amazingly good in every way. But I miss shifting my own gears. And now that I've spent a lot more time on the track, I feel like I will enjoy the 6MT more there as well.

According to Jalopnik last week, there will be no choice: "We’ve also heard the new M2 will be manual-only, so get excited about that." (http://jalopnik.com/report-2016-bmw-...t-f-1702917744)
If that statement would be accurate - which I personally doubt - it overrules earlier more reliable info. Rumors, rumors...

I am torn on the trans and just don't know at this point. Manual is so much more fun to drive until your stuck in traffic, which is the majority of my driving.
I do want the option to choose.

DCT for me. Pushed a manual for 13+ years and with daily traffic, it is too much to deal with...unless I keep the auto 328 as a daily beater and a fun manual M2 as a weekend car...hmm...

I drove an E92 M3 with DCT. It was fun, but there are things DCT can't do, at least not for me.
It won't go from 6th to 2nd on a mountain road while cruising and having a bit of spirited fun without going through every other gear. It felt lurchy while in manual mode in traffic. Auto mode feels better, but then the M3 doesn't feel as special. The DCT had some cool bits about it though too, the throttle blip on downshifts, the lack of down time between gears and the ability to be lazy and let the drive logic take control. For me, I'll be getting a proper manual. If that means waiting, I'm cool with that. The $3900 CDN that DCT costs will end up going towards mods of some sort, or I'll just eat filet mignon a lot more often.
