New Muffler - Problem ?
Okay guys/gals, I need some help. I was under the car today to check out the muffler and removal for my new M Performance Muffler I just ordered. When I looked at the muffler I was expecting an axleback system with a connection 6-8" from the rear of the muffler. Instead, this what I found:
No clamps until you get all the way back up to the downpipe! The pipe coming off the muffler is welded at the base as I expected it to be, but no more welded joints till you get all the way up to the resonator. Can anyone else confirm this? |

You have to cut off the old muffler as indicated by the installation instructions. The new muffler is clamped on to the existing pipe.

Wow! I'm now thinking this is not for me then. I was assuming when it said axleback system it was like other systems with OEM supplied mounting point already there on the midpipe. As you can see the pipe is too darn beautiful to be cutting into it

axel back means the rear axle back..... just muffler. cat back would be midpipe and mufflers. as you can see the muffler is already welded to the pipe from the factory, your not doing anything out of the ordinary |

If you're worried about it, just have some random shop fabricate the midpipe section for you, so you don't have to butcher the stock system .

I see SuperSprint is currently selling two pipes, one with resonator and another as straight pipe. Might be better to go with them for the mid pipe.
More I think about it, will leave the stock M Sport exhaust on. When I upgrade in a couple years to the M2 it should have the sound I want. Happy with leaving the car at Stage 1 with a CAI for now. When BMS gets the Stage 2 fully ready with the electronic waste gate (Map 2) incorporated I can upgrade to the JB4 Stage 2. Just some little farkles will be fine for now. Man the stock looks good already...can you just delete the resanator?
So is the performance exhaust just a muffler??? Thats a rip off. The NA E90 had the catback+muffler

A ripoff based on what exactly? The OEM exhaust on F generation cars is fully 3 inch all the way back... there is nothing to replace. The E90 was much more restrictive, hence piping farther back. Not everything is a ripoff just because you say it is.

M wheels use to be $3k range and thats already highend, now they want $4k for wheels wtf and lsd over $3k...yes its rip off At the end of the day its still a entry level 2 series and these perf/M parts are too expensive...maybe on a m5/m6 then its justified but not a 2 series OP, not saying you got rip off just saying bmw is overpriced (IMO)...im sure it sounds great

Its interesting to see how much prices have risen on mufflers. My old 99 M3 Active Autowerks was only $650 back in 2004. Guess inflation over 10 years.
Can only assume the cost of materials have gone up? Or is there that much newer technology built into the new muffles that cause for the rise in prices?

Yea i definitely understand the cost for a full exhaust setup. And I see the cost of just a muffler as everything just keeps going up. Its the nature of doing business. History will show that time and time again.

To answer your original question though there is a lot of internal technology that has improved over the years. Not sure if I saw it on Top Gear or some other show, but the latest engineering behind the fins and waves and everything inside is crazy. The performance gain from a new muffler is not just better air flow (bigger pipe) but it creates a vortex or vacuum or something and actually pulls gas through like a tornado.

Wow that's some good info. I was thinking about getting this after the fact but if the stock exhaust needs to be cut, I'd prefer the dealer to do it since I'm planning to lease the car. I'm used to simply unbolting the exhaust and bolting a new one in place, whether it be axleback or catback.

This is actually quite an easy job with a hole saw. I helped a friend do it on his 2014 335xi. There is a dimple where you are to cut we chose to hold the new muffler up against the stock to be sure that would be the right place. Then cut the pipe removed the stock and clamped on the aftermarket.
If you search the F30 forum you should find other with pictures showing the dimple. BTW his is a lease as well. We will just get a connector pipe to clamp the stock muffler back on.
