The 1M was controversial and had so much discussion around its pedigree as a true M car not because it wasn't offered with DCT, but because it didn't have a bespoke //M motor.

My comment was referring to DCT option instead of AT. I wasn't talking about MT at all. Are the X5M and X6M true //M cars? I don't think they are because of the AT and no availability of MT

Duh Napoleon, there's a M in the name

God, is this necessary? The argument for Badge Whores

My IQ is dropping after each successive post

All I care is how it drives. If it performs to stir my soul when I drive it who cares?

And the argument over the name or letter ughhh? What they have put out in the 5 and 6 seems to be a sad example of a drivers car.

Why would anybody write this if it wasn't that good of a drivers car, all I and a lot of people should care about

Top Gear, M135i Review:
" My most recent drive in what BMW defines as a real M car was in an M6.
It had all the manner of M technical goodness and was massively fast. But it was heavy and remote. I want M cars to mean cars that are light and sharp and involving and make you go "Mmmm". The M6 doesn't. This does.

BMW says it's not an M car so it isn't. Easy as that.
Regarding the badges, BMW put them there so I see no harm in keeping them. They say it's a car from the M performance line no more and no less. Who cares what people who can't tell the difference from a real M might think.

Putting your own M badges, big no-no. Keeping what the car comes with, not an issue IMO. Do I wish they called it 235iS with no M badges, yes. But again not a biggy.

I'm out.
Have you tried it? So how do you know?

Watching the videos published earlier, I'd be inclined to be pessimistic (lot of body roll, seems to loose the rear a bit easy, so it seems to be more tunes "fun" than "race"). But that's just speculations at this stage. The official number is that it is faster than the outgoing 1M.

30 hp... wider fenders and an M button on the steering don't look like a lot of difference to me to say remove all M badges from the car

I agree.

I think this is a good discussion, but so far no one has made a strong argument that the M235i is not a true M car. I read every post here but am still left confused.

One guy says "I've said it many times" ... still does not make it true.

Another poster says basically it can not be an M car because it does not compete with an Audi M-equivalent (RS3 or whatever that's called).

And then there's the no DCT and no bespoke engine argument. My response would be for you to check out the 1M.

No standard LSD and M suspension. Well, BMW will sell you these OEM M parts for your M235i.

We're truly just saying it doesn't "look" like an M car. It needs more body paneling and a quad exhaust in order for it to be more convincing and for the rest of the shortcomings to be forgiven.

Still very unclear. It seems to me like we don't want to believe its a true M car (based on the landslide votes in favor of no) and that the M brand has been diluted this badly, but it may be happening. I have no opinion on this by the way. I belong to the "its sad but who cares" camp. But still interesting. I would like to hear a convincing post or argument for/against. An official announcement, endorsement or whatever ...

M235i....you own like 10 bmws and you cant tell the difference???

Do you call your f30 335 an M car if you added the ppk, msport package, and upgraded brakes....or do we call that a "bmw performance" modded f30??

The f30 is different. It's still called a 335i no matter how many mods you bolt on to it. The M235i has an official M model designation. That is the whole point of this thread. Does this new designation by BMW have any significance?

NO. definitely a real M car.

the M235 is basically the continuation of the 135is. It should have been called the 235is. Same power and performance as well.

Here's how Chris Harris determines whether a car is worth the ///M badge in his view:

That was perfect. I really think Chris sums it up pretty well. A lot for the M235i to live up to if it wants to even be called a half-way M car. At the moment, it seems like it is not even that.

Thanks again for sharing that.

1) Go to www.bmw.com
2) Look under M cars section
3) don't find M235i
4) look under 2 series section
5) find M235i

Enough said.

The quote is on every car. M cars has one digit not three. It doesn't mean the M235i isn't awesome.

Maybe there are some restrictions on what can and can not be put in a non M car but my guess is that the main differentiator is who is in charge of developing the car AG or M. In the 235i I guess AG is in charge meaning that it's their processes and design frame work not M's that is used and M is acting consultants and assisting with tuning some parts.

No, BMW claims M cars have 80% of parts different compare to non m-cars. This is not the case of M235i.
