Being that these are arriving at dealers, why are there no legit reviews out there from magazines etc? 228i MSport seems like a good value but would love to hear how it drives. |

I drove a 228i MSport automatic with no additional options yesterday. For reference, I also have an E92 M3 and an F10 535i.
The 228i felt a lot like my M3 inside. I love the seating position, nice and low for us tall guys, about 2" lower than the M3's power seats with the 228i manual adjust sport seats. You really feel like you're in the cockpit and part of the car, instead of sort of "sitting on top of it" like you feel in a lot of other small coupes. The good: I had a blast driving the 228i around town. The steering, which everyone is sh*tting on, is quite good. Extremely responsive. It's light, which some people might not like, but it didn't bother me. The engine, both in response and noise, exceeded my expectations. I was comparing it to my '10 GTI, which had similar power numbers and less wtq. The 228i was a noticeably more responsive. The automatic shifts right when you expect it to; and if you're not happy there's always the flappy paddles! I didn't get a chance to test the suspension much; but for what this car is, I think it is dialed in very well. The ride is very comfortable but it didn't feel like steering a tuna boat. The bad: The stock sound system is abysmal. Get the premium sound if you like to listen to music above conversational level (I know that not everyone does). Also, in the interest of being fully impartial, there is a bit of turbo lag in first gear. It reminds me a lot of my 997S where the power really doesn't come on until you throw it into 2nd. The Verdict: Cannot wait to buy one. |

Thanks for sharing. As a fellow E9X M3 owner this review is a great reference.

Got to drive a 228 msport 6,speed man today....compared to m235 I drove yesterday. While it is awesome car it is more than I need and price differential with what I got on 228 msport this will suit me!

How is the 6-speed transmission? How does the engine feel compared to the 228i in automatic if you've driven that? Thanks! |

Never drove a 228 auto but last yr had a 320i with auto it was ok but I don't like autos. The 6 speed man is a dream the same feel shift bewtween 235 and 228 really smooth short throw. Coming from my 128 it is smoother and not as notchy. First thing I notice with n20 engine is the mid range torque...seems way more than the 1er. Steering is pretty light in eco pro but in sport mode it firms up pretty good..a little less road feel than the 1er but not enough of anything to make me regret anything. I love the msport wheel the feel in the hands! First gear only to get going 2nd is where it happens I can get it going real good revs here and just feel the torque. Engine sound is not as throaty as the m235..but you feel the torque Wjen you stamp nonetheless. For and finish are impeccable thing stops on a dime and real comfortable. Stock radio sort of crap ...Harmon karden does much better. All in all a great step up from my prev 1er

I agree with most of that. I test drove a 128i last year (and a 320 as well) and they were both completely awful. I went in to the 228i test drive expecting something similar, but I was blown away.
