PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE change your coolant expansion tank hose

I had seen the warnings. I thought, yeah, I should do that. And then FORGOT.

This brittle little hose is a 5 minute job to swap. By anyone, even without tools.

It decided to shit the bed at 65k miles and blew coolant everywhere. I was 45 miles from home, so had to stop several times and refill the coolant with water to make it home without a tow.

Then it took me 1/2 a day to flush the coolant, clean up the engine bay mess and 5 minutes to change the tube. Lots of good guidance here in the forums. I love the fact that you can force the water pump to cycle the coolant. My old e30 was a PIA to bleed the air when flushing.

The funny thing is, I had changed the charge pipe before it was also going to fail. Just forgot I had read about the expansion tube. Was a $20 part then. Paid $44 at the dealer now.

Do not put this off…like me.

Yes, hopefully the new pipe is made from improved plastic. I changed mine at 80,000km, it broke when I removed it.
Remember to lubricate the o rings before installing, never go in dry

Always a good reminder.

I changed mine out at 8 years of age. Will swap again in 30,000 miles just so I don't have to worry about it.

I keep a spare in my trunk, for the reasonable cost its worth the aggravation noted above.

i also keep a spare, but at home. Every time I have the F30 or F22 hood open, I push on ends to see if it breaks.

Listen to the man!
I found this post, ordered a cheap replacement, then decided i wanted to use a better one (the Rein one from FCP euro) so i waited 4 more days instead of just swapping the cheap one in. And guess what, today it broke! Should have just swapped it when i got the first one. 2016 m235i 52K miles

I just replaced my VC and this happened to me. I meant to buy one a year ago Lol. The car was off and I was able to plug the connection with a screw at the top coolant hose. I ordered the part and I guess I can just replace it without bleeding it?

I replaced mine without bleeding the system, but I replaced mine before it broke so maybe not the same if yours broke.

if thats the only part of the coolant system that is replaced, no bleeding is necessary. If you replace it while cold, you'll probably have nothing in the hose.

Not like the built in bleeding is difficult though, lol.

Yes, I replaced my coolant and did the full bleeding process (using the Electric water pump) a year ago. By built in do you mean the screw at the expansion tank? Or the whole process using the water pump. Thanks for the replies, it was not running but still had a little coolant spilling from the connection at the top of the water hose onto my garage floor. So running and warm it would be a mess I am lucky as it was very brittle on both ends so it would have broken sooner than later!

Tried to replace mine. The connector on the coolant reservoir came off easily but the connector on the upper radiator hose refused to budge (and, yes, the metal clip was all the way out). I didn't want to force it as the upper radiator hose where the overflow hose connects looks to be the same cheap, recycled German crap plastic as the overflow hose ends and I didn't want to break it. Any thoughts on how to get this off without breaking the upper radiator hose? Or, should I bite the bullet and order an upper radiator hose as well?

Ordering a valve cover from FCP Euro today. Adding this to the cart to have as insurance. Mine broke when they were prepping the car for delivery 2 years ago. New hose has 20k miles on it but for $37 and lifetime replacement it's a good buy.
