BMW Navigation Alternatives
I a considering a 2 series as my next car, but am having a hard time thinking that 4-5% of the MSRP could be for factory navigation. What are the alternatives? Is anyone having regrets for passing up on factory nav?

The nav system comes with a much nicer screen than the non-nav option, which for me was something that was important. I assume the same holds true for an M240i as it did for my 2016 M235i.

Yes the larger screen is very nice. It would be nice if you could get CarPlay without Nav. I ordered my car exactly how I wanted it and I just couldn't justify it for the cost.

Alternatives: google maps of course for regular navigation. I use HERE Maps for whenever I'm going somewhere without reliable internet. That app allows you to download maps for offline use. It's free. And still has voice guidance, turn by turn, and searchable POI. No regrets here. I like the extra cash in my pocket. |

No nav, no regrets. Not worth the cost. I use a mix of Google Maps (best graphical display) and Waze (usually beats a radar detector). I have a magnetic mount on my dash right beside the display, with a charging cable routed behind the radio down to a USB adapter in the cigarette lighter.
Had the Nav package come with the heads up display, I would have given it some more serious consideration...

I have nav and love it, but I am still using Waze for radar more and more. I could live without Nav, but it still is very convenient and don't regret getting it. You can't beat the integration and the way you're interacting with the maps, plus the traffic info tends to be quite good.
Have a magnetic mount with a short charging cable for the phone, which makes the whole setup very non intrusive and easy to use. |

No nav here and it's not been an issue. I have a spare phone mounted just behind the shifter for Torque. On the rare occasion that I need nav I just use that.
As for the screen, you can retrofit the larger screen later on. It'll cost you about $300 for the screen itself and a bit of knowledge on how to code your car. If you're like me you're learning how to code anyway to turn on other features. There are AV boxes you can install to support an aftermarket backup camera and phone mirroring. Then you mirror for nav. I wouldn't since I have the spare phone, but it's an option. But, yeah, the larger screen is nice. My screen is off 75% of the time, so :/.

I did not have Nav on my coupe but do on my vert. I actually really like having it, the bigger screen is really nice but honestly most of the time I use it to have an idea of what the road looks like up ahead when I am driving on the highway. Lot easier to use than phone screen, which is fine, but with it in the car you get a lot more functionality out of it.
Helps a LOT with resale too if that's a concern down the road. No you won't get all your $ back for it but you will have an easier time moving the car. |

I will add that if the HUD was an option I definitely would have bought it. Sadly, the aftermarket solutions I've seen so far leave a lot to be desired. Such as a more integrated look than some clunky box on top of my dash that screams "Break into this car and steal me." :/

The one thing about the BMW nav that is hard to beat is the integration into the dash cluster. To not have look at the iDrive screen but simply check your instrument panel for the next turn/change is pretty good and not something that you can get with any other solution.
I do run Waze on my phone as well, but that's solely for LEO alerts. |

When I am doing any high speed driving on the turnpike I always have Nav, radar detector, and Waze going. |

BMW actually came out with a aftermarket option that uses the original screen,
Kind of cool to be honest but i don't know if its worth the cost. I'm guessing it will be $1000.00 Plus after everything is said and done. Id be curious if anyone knows how well this works? Being that it is Genuine BMW i should think it will At least integrate seamlessly into your non NAV car you know? check it out guys http://www.shopbmwusa.com/Product/53...GATION-RETROFI... |
