are there any diffs between the 228i m-sport 6mt and the m235i 6mt? also, can any previous e92 335i 6mt owners opine?
I currently have a '08 e92 335i 6MT and the throws are definitely long...considering 228i m-sport 6MT |

You can do a search on it, as it has been discussed, but yes the transmission is different between the 235 and the 228.

not to thread jack but is the gear leaver really low like it was on the 135? where if you rested your arm on the arm rest you had to reach down to change gear?

I have M235i and the center console with gear lever appears higher than in 128i I previously owned. It bothered me at the beginning (I don't use armrest) so I had to raise the seat.

I just test drove an m235i manual and the shifts are much shorter then my current 135i. Is this stock? Or is there a short shifter performance option? I didn't see one when i ordered.

I'm curious as to where you've read the manual transmissions are different. I've read virtually every post comparing the two and every time the driver states they feel exactly the same.

Yes, the part numbers are different as they mate up with different engines so they are not interchangeable. But, do we have good information that the driving experience (shifter feel, throw, etc) is or is not different?

And that's a good point. Can't expect them to be the same exact part when connecting to two different engines. |

Member Dalrx (just drove a 228 thread)
"Never drove a 228 auto but last yr had a 320i with auto it was ok but I don't like autos. The 6 speed man is a dream the same feel shift bewtween 235 and 228 really smooth short throw. Coming from my 128 it is smoother and not as notchy. First thing I notice with n20 engine is the mid range torque...seems way more than the 1er. Steering is pretty light in eco pro but in sport mode it firms up pretty good..a little less road feel than the 1er but not enough of anything to make me regret anything. I love the msport wheel the feel in the hands! First gear only to get going 2nd is where it happens I can get it going real good revs here and just feel the torque. Engine sound is not as throaty as the m235..but you feel the torque Wjen you stamp nonetheless. For and finish are impeccable thing stops on a dime and real comfortable. Stock radio sort of crap ...Harmon karden does much better. All in all a great step up from my prev 1er" One example. |

From what I remember, and keep in mind it has been years, the clutch on the 228 feels very similar, but I think the pedal feels considerably softer than the S2000, and softer still than the Evo. I think the shifting feels smoothest on the 228. The S2000 might have had a slightly shorter throw, but I am not 100% sure on that. I think the synchros on my S2k had been somewhat worn when I got the car, so there was some clunk and resistance in a couple of the gears. Especially second. Both cars are miles ahead of the Evo X on terms of the shift smoothness. There was nothing buttery about that transmission. |

I have a 6 speed 228i. Overall, I am very pleased with the feel. Shifting is very smooth, and the clutch engages much quicker than the only other manual BMW I have driven before, an E46 330i 5 speed. I did test drive the 8 speed auto, and the acceleration from stand still feels stronger than the 6 speed. I guess that makes sense since the first 2 gear ratios are lower in the auto. So there is a definite trade off there.
