Was just asking about this. Its just so stupid not to include this in a car you call "performance" oriented. So only full M cars get a temp gauge? What a joke bmw. At least lets us see it in the iDrive system.

I don't think it's a battery charge indicator. If you look closely at the display it says MPG under it so it's an indicator of your fuel economy with probably something regarding the battery in the blue area.

But I agree, this is all worthless crap because I can always get my mpg in the idrive or in the extended display. I would much rather have had an oil temperature gauge in its place.

surely a digital read out is better than a guage with a neede and 4 marks?

That's just it - you can't look down and see it in the instrument cluster - you have to go looking for it, and that's with the extended version.

Not sure how to find it with the standard cluster.

Does anyone know if you can add gauges to the car? I was thinking to just add a couple very small gauges for temp readings.

I too agree it is stupid not to have it built in but oh well it seems everything these days is so automated for the dumb people you have to just find the loop wholes and work around them.

So maybe the question is, does the car limit revs when cold?

Honestly though, some common sense should prevail here. Drive moderately for 5 minutes before you hammer the throttle.

This would be nice if it was like the M3 that had the lights that went out as the car warmed up.

Imagine temp is reachable from the obd11 port so any guage that picks that up would be fine

I contacted P3Car today and here is their reply below.

Thanks for your interest in our product. Yes we will be making this gauge, yes it will show oil temp and it will be out mid march.

Cheers

I believe that is exclusive to true M cars - my dad's Z4MC does that as well.

Awesome news, thanks for the info. That will be a great mod especially if it can also show boost level.

Since it seems like the unwanted indicator (mpg, batt) is digital, wonder if anyone will be able to code in a temp gauge instead of that. I'm hopeful! I'm sure it'll happen if this omission becomes more mainstream.

This is good news but the only draw back to these is you still have to skip through to find the temp you want. I am hoping to find a couple small fairly cheap gauges to just read coolant and oil temps. I want to look at the gauge quickly and determine if it warm or cold. Not have to press a button to scan through to find my temps. If i can find a way to have it displayed on the Nav system i will go that rout too.

So on a modern car, with heat exchangers and low viscosity oil what is the correct operating oil temperature before you should rev harder?

Ideally, normal operating temp, which on our N54 and N55 has been around 210 f. My comically undercooled S52 ran at around 240 and had a warning light that came on at 270, which on track days anywhere over 90 f was after about 20 minutes.

That's a 328i, not a 335i, which had oil temp in place of the mpg indicator.

So BMW can't learn from past mistakes?

I guess a Scangauge can work too. Everything just seems like a clunky solution to a problem that shouldn't exist.
