no temp gauge in the M235?!!!

The more I read about the lack of temperature gauges in the "almost M" BMW, the more I'm shocked with what is happening to BMW this days...

does anyone need a temp guage? what will you use it for? the cars are tested on 24hr straight 'ring journeys and dont overheat.

The car will pick up a high temp and warn you if it needs too and if you really want one, its unlockable in the idrive with some digging, but personally i dont really care.

Well I'm going to want to know when it's nicely warmed up so I can safely give it some pasty. My 135i takes an age to warm up, and the time varies between winter and summer, so I'm supposed to guess in this car? At 40 odd grand she should tell me when she's ready.
Can't believe it doesn't have a gauge.

Yeah? So what's next to go - the tachometer?

guess in the UK maybe its less important, but ive never really looked at temp guages before giving it some. 5 mins of driving and i class it as warm enough for spirited driving.

I agree with the OP - this is just dumb...the M235 that I ordered is on a boat, almost to the dock...I didn't realize I had to order the extended instrument cluster, in the tech package, in order to get a proper readout.

I too, wait for the oil temp gauge to move prior to pushing the car too hard.

Boggles my mind....

Agreed. It's pretty ridiculous.

My plan is to give it a few minutes of calm driving then I'll push it as hard as I want. If it has major problems they can't say a word to me since they didn't provide a way to tell when it's at proper operating temperature.

Good thing I'm leasing.

I wasn't aware the extended cluster gives a temp readout? My f30 has the extended cluster but doesn't give temp warnings unless you overheat. Then again, the f30 has a oil temp gauge.

I think it gives oil and coolant temp in a different menu, at least I remember seeing that somewhere on here before.

I will try to find the pic of I am thinking of...

Yes, it is utterly stupid not to include a temp gauge. Look whats in its place too. Some kind of battery charge indicator? What's the point of that? Some bean counter at BMW decided the battery charge is a more valuable piece of information than engine temperature?

People in here will make excuses for BMW, but it's totally stupid. Between fake engine noise, the 4-banger in the M2, and the ever increasing size and weight of everything, BMW is doing everything it can to ensure I will NOT be a customer in the future.

Agreed.

And if you ordered before you knew that without the extended cluster display (like me) that nothing would be there - it is even more stupid. There is just an effing "hole" under the RPM tach. Who does that? I had a bare bones 2007 E92 328i, it seriously only had heated seats. That's it - but at least the cluster included an oil temp gauge.

This is supposed to be an M performance model, right? People who want something more sporty, yes? Why the hell do you leave the oil temp off THAT instrument cluster? It makes no sense...

And you're right in the post above this one - some dipshit made this decision without having any idea what they were doing.

It's like when the first N54s were over heating at tracks, and BMW actually changed the temp scale within the instrument cluster on future cars - so you didn't freak out and think the car was over heating. Hilarious. But ultimately stupid.

that menu is available through coding, no need to buy an option for it, at least not in UK so assume its the same, there is no "extended cluster" option here

Valid point. The problem is that this omission seems too obvious to be thought of when you're ticking off the "options" list.

Who would think you would need an additional package just to see oil temp? I sure didn't...

I guess this is what you get for being one of the very first to order a new model...

standard in uk is black panel display:

Black Panel technology
The instrument panel and Info Display with Black Panel Technology provide the BMW Driver with a clearly-arranged overview of important information to meet his needs.

On some BMW models (e.g. BMW 7 Series), the instrument panel and Info Display are equipped with Black Panel technology. ‘Black Panel’ means that one only sees an elegant, matte, black surface when the ignition is turned off. Only a few details, like the scale markings on the dials, are still visible. The instruments – only those selected by the driver or relevant to his current needs – appear when the driver presses the start button.

The instrument panel comprises the four classical dials: fuel gauge, speedometer, rev counter and oil temperature gauge. Integrated graphics give extra information about the current fuel consumption and the range.
The wide (6:1) and high-resolution (318 dpi) Info Display shows more driving and safety-related information. This includes Check Control messages (e.g. ‘Bonnet open. Bring the vehicle to a gentle stop!’) or status and warning signs from the Driver Assistance system. The navigation system’s High Guiding and Lane Guiding functions are made possible by Black Panel technology: easily-comprehensible arrows give the driver precise instructions, particularly when dealing with confusing situations like complicated intersections and lane changes at motorway junctions. Many signs consist of a combination of a picture and words. The Service Interval Indicator even depicts the actual BMW model in its respective colour. The buttons on the multifunction steering wheel can be used to display entertainment and communication content like radio stations, addresses or telephone numbers.

The most important driving information will appear in the Head-Up Display, if the vehicle is equipped with one and it is switched on. If the driver deactivates the Head-Up Display the information will appear in the Info Display
