M235i Idle Ticking Noise
My M235i is only just nearing 350 miles on the clock so far, but since new, it sounds pretty rattly on idle - quite a ticking noise to say the least.
It runs fine, and the noise disappears as soon as the revs increase of course, just wondering if this sort of 'ticking' noise on idle is fairly normal for the M235i, or something I should be worrying about? Can anyone shed any light on this? |

Video? BMW I6s can be a bit clicky, within reason. I am going to guess and say it is probably normal. BMW has been making the N55 for quite some time now, most of the kinks have been worked out, so I am guessing you are mistaking the normal engine sound for a problem. Would like to hear a video though.

I know with Audis that the high pressure fuel pumps can be loud. On my dad's RS4 there is one high pressure fuel pump per cylinder bank, which are driven by a lobe just for it on both of the intake cams. Each pump runs at almost 2,000 PSI, so it really needs to pump hard, and as a result they do make that ticking noise.

Yep, lifters/injector rail, have an industrious sound to them. Same was the case on my N54 135i. Non issue.

It is almost a diesel-y sound, agreed. I grew to like it quite a bit. Definitely an industrious, raw, motor sound. Nothing like a BMW motor.

I have the M235i 2016 model and about 420 miles on it only, ticking sound comes up right when i start the car and when i drive off it tick as i step on gas, the faster i go the faster it click but than when it finaly warmed up, the ticking sound went away about maybe 10 min into driving local speed. My first BMW coming from 2014 Lexus IS350 F-Sport and this is something new.

Mine just had a horrible rattle was a faulty clamp on the exhaust flap maybe something to check.

Typically only on startup, for 30-60 seconds, depending on how long it takes to come up to the set operating temperature.

Hydraulic valve lifters are usually the culprit. That being said, my M235 doesn't make any clicking noise except for maybe a faint click for the first few seconds on a cold startup. The BMW four cylinder and six banger engines sound completely different at idle so you can't compare the two. The 4 cylinder is noticeably more clacky.
