So I have had my M235i since December 2014 and I had never even attempted to use the Launch Control Feature always thought about it but just never did , Until I went driving with my friend with an e92 m3 who loves launching his 6mt but usually ends up only in tire smoke. was enjoying some back roads and ended up at A closed private road with a dead end he knew of and I decided to give it A try.

1st attempt foot to the floor on the gas, didn't brake hard enough or long enough something caused the Flag to not show up on dash , assumed since I don't have tech package maybe the LC on dash was part of that package tires spun like you would assume, so I tried it again

2nd attempt Held foot down completely to the floor, same with gas , light on dash popped up Launch active or something to that effect with racing flag. Car came out hard and hooked up with 1/4th of the tire spin of the first attempt definitely much harder and faster. Apparently a second successful launch activation within a certain time would allow the car to learn tarmac and the launch is even more effective can't say for sure but would believe it.

Verdict: Does The Launch Control Work, Yes In my opinion

After that wanted to have some fun after

The car with jb4 and downpipe has tons of usable torque and with the Traction Control off it can spin well into 4th maybe 5th

Computer generated video

also added some other pictures , new wheels in the works !

I've not tried it yet. I notice the rear end kicked out a bit. Did you reign it back in or did the computer get you back in line?

That was the attempt where I did not fully engage launch control , as far as the back kicking out it once the car really gets the wheels spinning and really into its torque the back was starting to kick hard as you can see I just let off instead of counter steering or trying anything fancy and end up on Jalopnik :

The actual LC setting are amazing you really feel something is at work allowing just the right amount of slip to not cut power , apparently a second time on the same surface the car would have learned the surface and be more effective

Launch control is a nice function as a one off, but i wouldn't want to subject the clutch packs and torque converter in the 8hp45 to too many of them from a JB4'd N55. Especially if you're running wider rubber.

Very true Its all about moderation! all systems are running up to normal operating temperature and with amble time to cool in between

Hopefully your 2nd run had about 95% less spin because that first launch would have netted you a deep 14 second pass in the 1/4 mile and one terrible 60 foot time. On street tires, when you launch and the tires just tramp around a bit, then you know you nailed a solid and quick launch.

i do find the launch control thing a bit amusing. All you're really doing is brake stalling like any other automatic can do, the primary difference the LC function appears to allow for more boost on launch. Most report better 60 foots by not using LC.

the video was for fun wasn't the actual Launch control since it didn't engage, the Feature itself is not only for brake stalling / boosting , the stability and traction control systems have special setting. bone stock I would say the reports of 60 foots would be true not using the feature, but with more boost and other mods it may be beneficial to use with the correct tire and surface It would definitely hook up and be faster

Building boost boosting from a stand still will change that , a roll 2nd gear pull with traction on is much different lol

I need to try LC again. I think I've only tried it once before my JB tune.

you should the launch when done correctly hooks up really well especially with a tune , but when you don't fully engaged It can get pretty interesting lol

I didn't realize when I recorded this my jb4 had boost limited in 1-3rd I would like to try again with the limiter off, just trying to get ready for the new Michelin Pilot Sport 4s !!!!

On a stock OEM powered car yes I thought it worked fairly well once tires were heated up. But any type of tuning and downpipes seems to me like it threw my car off that LC launch point. Now that I have a bigger turbo it's completely useless, braking with left foot and revving up the rpm to 1900 seems to work great. Just my thoughts and experience.
