REVIEW: Bimmer-tech Easy USB iDrive Coding
I'll be honest here. I am an IT professional, and software developer, and even I was a tad scared when I started researching the various different coding solutions. I kept reading about bricked ECUs and such, and after installing and configuring all the software on my PC to do some coding myself, I pussy'd out and decided it was best to just leave it the hell alone for fear of messing something up.
I then looked at Carly, but the deeper I dug, the more cases I found where people had problems and ended up having to have their cars towed, or removing modules to have them reprogrammed by BMW. Yeah-nah. Not for me. Then I came across Bimmer-Tech's Easy USB iDrive Coding System, witch allows you to enter your VIN and select the options you want (iDrive only). they then send you a file and you follow simple instructions to install it on the car. It really is idiotproof. In the video below, I take you through the whole installation process, and the result. Highly recommended. Great product indeed! |

Different features cost different amounts, but it's capped at $200USD. So you can add as many as you want.
Also note I'm not affiliated with them in any way. I'm just a paying customer who decided to do a review for my channel. |

Ah, cool. I too am a software developer. Decided to do it myself. Definitely nerve wracking the first time lol, but if you're careful and don't click on code defaults you'll be okay.
Thanks for the review. It's always good to have different options. |

I am also an IT professional, although retired after 44 years in IT, having done virtually every type of job in the profession, including software development, server and OS engineering, and cybersecurity. I was somewhat skeptical about E-Sys, and used Carly first, but found it pretty limited for F-chassis cars. It has improved a great deal in the past several months, but still no match for E-Sys. If you are careful, read and follow the coding guide and other step-by-stepo directions, you won't have any problems coding any of the available modules.
People that have problems likely didn't follow directions, which includes having the car running while coding to provide a steady current into all the modules. Best part about E-Sys is that you can read the module's contents into a file, disconnect and shut off the car, make changes very carefully to the file after creating a backup of the unmodified file, and then start up and reconnect and push the modified file back into its module. If things don't work right, you can always back out changes using the unmodified file.

I'm coding on a Retina Macbook Pro and just use a USB to ethernet adapter and the enet cable. Total was $55 and I was good to go. Really simple and I saved a bunch of time and money. If they ever reset during service, I could just do it again. |

The only way you're going to brick your car is if you decide to reset to default values. Just stick with what's been tested on the coding sheet and remember to keep your car running to avoid voltage spikes interfering with the process. I use one laptop for coding and another with reference video's just to be sure. Personally, I think that anything that costs more than the OBD2 to Ethernet cable (25$) is pure theft considered the work done. |
