Well deserved. The current 3 series including the new m3/m4 lacks soul and the BMW DNA. I just wish the 2 had 4 doors.

I can see it. Aside from the M3/4, that series just doesn't really do it for me anymore. They just keep getting bigger and BMW is trying to fill every niche market it can think of.

I wouldn't call the Isetta BMW's true roots. It was built under license from the company that originally designed it, Iso. However, BMW did re-engineer parts of the car to suit their needs.

It's kinda like undertaker finally losing at wrestlemania except cars don't get old, every year there's a new model .it really is sad that the 3 is no longer top ten.. That's a long streak to have broken .
That being said the e46 m3 was my favorite car of all time and till this day I regret giving it up .. Looking forward to the next m2

A car that has a torque converter and a non locking diff is not a proper enthusiast's car in my opinion. It just doesn't do the right stuff.

M235i in 6MT and with a replaced diff could be just right.

That Honda accord now has tied the 3er on the list. My dad always owned acaccord for value and I 3ers for the fun. That accord is one sleeper of a value car!

You could be a private eye and drive an Accord because nobody would notice you.

More like it puts you to sleep.

Honda needs to wake up.

That's well and good for now, but it is no secret that BMW is moving all existing vehicles that sit below the 3 Series in the lineup to the UKL platform over the next few years. Of course it is entirely possible for a company to buld a great FWD/AWD car (there are some on the 10Best list today), but it does mean that you are giving up a major trait that currently makes the car a 10Best contender to begin with. So it is by no means a clear future for BMW here. The UKL cars will be great I'm sure but there is a lot of strong competition in the small FWD car segments (such as the Volkswagen Golf and Mazda 3 which are perennial favorites that once again made the list this year).

Basically, the 3 series has become the 5 series. The 5 series is the new 7 series. And the 2 series is the old 3 series. Not sure what the 7 series' role is these days.

I don't get the obsession with needing larger and larger cars, but I know the demand is there.

SIMPLE LOGIC would tell you to add more numbers to the list rather than increase the size of the existing ones.

Better to add an 8 and 9 series etc rather than grow the entire range to a point where the 1 series is bigger than an old 3 series.. The latter eventually means you no longer have a small RWD sports car, which is whole reason BMW were and are better than Audi (IMO).

There is only the zero series left for a small car as I cannot see how you can market a minus one series!

But I heard the 1 series sedan will be FWD and built in another platform. I hope BMW offers at least a GC 2 series. I drove the M235 and like it; however, I need to have 4 doors on my daily car. My friend has a new Audi S3 and it is a nice alternative if BMW does not launch the 2 GC soon.

No surprise to BMW enthusiasts, that the 3 series has lost its way. We have been saying it for years that they are getting too big and porky. It's basically a 5-series now. Oh how I want to go back and dig up some old posts where I got flamed for bitching about exactly this.

I agree that the M2 will be the new car to have.

Yes, the 1 will be on the UKL platform shared with Mini. I hoped for a GC also, but gave up waiting and sacrificed the rear doors. My contacts in the industry say there is no GC coming between the 1 sedan and 3 sedan. The S3 is interesting, but automatic only, and doesn't quite have the same rear wheel drive feel, and Audi's track record on quality with the A4 is questionable. In the end, I am adjusting to life without rear doors and it's not that bad unless you will have frequent passengers. So far, no one has sat in the back seat of mine. That's what my wife's E350 is for!

Agreed, it's a sad day when a fake M with a slushbox is the best drivers car BMW makes. Hopefully the M2 will fix everything.

Correct.

It's like a dog show. Each breed is measured against their breed standards…not which is the best dog.

Mazda 6 and Accord are measured against their standards (midsize family car). Within their segments they are standouts against others via things like quality, handling, economy, reliability, appearance, safety, etc.

The fact that the 3 series is no longer on there shows how it's competition has caught up and in some cases passed it.

The only way this would be indicated is if a rival in it's segment made the list, which none have. This is more to do with the 2 series being a better overall value than the 3 imo, which I agree with. People coming out of the woodwork to hate on BMW for making a very good car.

The M235i is available with a manual and the list did not specify a transmission so I'm not sure what you're referring to. Also, the list is not focused purely on best drivers car, otherwise cars like the Tesla would be replaced by others like the Z/28.

Yes tires.

-And more HP
-And better performance
-And more room
-And an upgraded interior
-And a less chattery ride
-And better gas mileage
-And better brakes
-And better looking (according to almost every reviewer)

The 1 series is certainly the ancestor of the 2 series and where it gets most of it's DNA, but BWM did a damn fine job of making evolutionary changes in many little areas that made it a much more appealing car to most folks.

That's the thing. These blogs are full of us crazies who like taking a into a corner at 3x the legal speed limit. But WE"RE not normal. And certainly not a cutaway of most BMW drivers.

The 1 series was a fun little breed and it's owners appreciate the spunkiness it provided. The 2 series is their 2nd attempt at the same segment with improvements in many areas that has yielded a class-leading car that the entire world is smiling at.
