228i - Footwell Lighting

Hi All,

I've got a 2014 228i and I think it's supposed to have footwell lighting. I've never noticed any in mine.

I've got the following packages, should I have footwell lighting, or is it as incredibly dim as the two LED lights in the overhead?

- M Sport
- Premium
- Tech
- Cold Weather
- HK Sound

Thanks in advance!

There are two brightness levels on the foot lighting.
Bright one when door opened or courtesy light is on and dim one that is on when headlights (or parking lights) are on.
The later one is very dim.
You can adjust it through i-drive control and intrument panel light dimmer.
You should have footwell lighting since your car has premium package that includes ambience lighting.
My car does have footwell lighting even though it doesn't have premium package.

I've definately got the lights on the exterior door handles and the bottom of the doors that illuminate the ground, but seems like nothing in the interior footwall itself

I just noticed my footwell lighting yesterday when I was playing with the dimmer. I drive with the internal lights almost on the dimmest setting. At that setting the lights in the foot well and the one in the overhead console are essentially unnoticeable.

I have a 228i with Prem and Tech package and there really is no footwell lighting except when you open the car. Once you close the door the only ambient lighting coming from the footwell is the little bit from the trunk release....so none really. Maybe you need the lighting package for that. I also cannot change colors of ambient lighting either...so I expect it is something in the lighting package.

Are you in the US? I have a 228i baseline on the way and i was wondering about this. Would you happen to have a picture? I was in another base 228i today and the doors had no lights didnt check for footwell lighting.

The ambient lighting is tied to the dash brightness by default. So if your dash brightness and the ambient light slider in iDrive both aren't at full it's not very bright at all.

It is possible to code the car to have the ambient light slider be independent of the dash lighting so you can turn down the bright orange and still see some of the pretty other lights :-)

I got a 15 not sure if that makes a difference. Is it pre wired or is there aftermarket alternatives?

I run my dash lighting full bright and the only footwell lighting comes from the trunk release which is almost none.

My car does not have premium or tech packages but has lighting package, m-sport and DHP.
It does have footwell lights.
They are rather white when doors are opened and are either white or orange when instrument lights are on.
I don't have ambience light so there is no map lights, vanity lights or door handle lights.
Here is a picture of it on driver side (there is also one on passenger side).
It is very dim.

Does the light get fairly more visible when/if youre brightness for the accent lights is turned all the way up?

Brigthness for ambience (accent) light is turned all the way up.
I did not notice this feature at first until I saw it reflecting from folded window shade that I left it under passenger footwell.
