M235i depreciation? appreciation?
Hello everyone,
I am in the market for a 6mt M235i and I was just curious as to what the predictions are as for the value of this car in the future. Will this be another 1M story? Do you think car will go up in value? Why or why not? Don't mean to start a debate, just curious as to the type of speculation in the air for this cool car. Those in places where there are M135i, how well did those car hold their values? Last edited by ocN55; 12-21-2014 at 04:15 AM.. |

M235i / M240i / 240Tii / M2 ... Will all drop in value unlike a fine wine. So, if that's what you looking for, look on. |

I'm actually on the fence between an m235i and a f30 335i, I figured the m235i would hold its value (not necessarily go up in value) over the f30 335i, which are much more common. |

dream on...
the M235 is depreciating like an ordinary mass production car...because it is an ordinary mass production car. sorry to burst your bubble... I do think in the long term...like 15-20 years from now cars like the M235 and 135is will retain some collectible value....but after they have depreciated properly... |

This is true but it is one fun mass produced car. I think the M2 might hold it's value better than most think but prolly not like the 1M....that was a very unique time. But i get a feeling when it is released there will be a market increase of 1M availability and with that lower pricing

Buy the car that you like most and enjoy it while you have it. I can't imagine any difference in depreciation due to market saturation to be enough to warrant selecting a car that you don't like as much as the other.

The 235 will depreciate very similarly to a 335. They are rarer, but also less in demand. The 1M was an ultra rare and limited production car.

I'm pretty sure we will see a market correction on the 1M when the M2 comes out, but it will still retain excellent value (it will just come down from the ludicrous used>MSRP prices).

A smart buyer tries to predict depreciation.
If you buy and plan on selling your car a few years down the line the M235 could be one of those great buys that hold unusual high-value. The 2M may shift sentiment away from the 1M. Couple of people mentioned to me the 2M's constant talk at this years SEMA show. |

I think the safest approach is to assume that any new car is going to depreciate in value and every once in a blue moon, like with the 1M, you'll get lucky. But to assume that a non-limited production car is going to hold it's value, much less appreciate in value, is a very risky proposition. The 1M was a very unusual case. Not only was it a very limited production run, but the 1 Series itself was discontinued making the 1M exceedingly rare. While there don't seem to be a lot of 235's around, anyone with $45,000 can order one and there's no indication at all that there won't be a 2016, 2017, etc. 235i so it will never come under the definition of a "rare" car.

...i can't think of any situation where considering a car as a place to park your money is a good idea. generally speaking, as in always, autos are a money losing endeavor. period. this is why i won't buy a car above 40k and i will never buy new. CPO all the wayyyyyyy. situations like the 1M are flukes.

Given the production numbers, it will not appreciate. However, like the 135is and 335is, it will depreciate less than the "standard" production models (228i, 328i, 335i, etc.). I think that's why the lease rates aren't as attractive as I would like them to be. BMW can make good money reselling CPO M235i's and I want that to reflect in the residual value.
Also, keep in mind BMW sells much, much fewer 2-series models than 3-series models. |
