Auto blip on downshift - 6MT

Can someone with the 6MT describe how the auto blip on downshift works, and more importantly, how it feels compared to other manuals. I'm considering the m240 but am on the fence between the AT and MT.

For comparison, I currently have a 2007 M Coupe with 6MT and a 2011 328 with AT, and I hate the AT on the 328 - it's constantly in the wrong gear, never getting up to power when I want it to, etc. so I'm strongly considering the MT because I'm afraid of the AT robbing me of the feel of power in the m240.

It just works...

I dont know the mechanics of it but there must be a sensor in the gate for each gear and it blips appropriately even if you skip a gear like 6 to 4 when coming down an exit ramp

I was a skeptic but I'm totally sold on it....its wonderfully implemented

I'm trying to understand when it triggers and how much it revs - there are no MTs anywhere near me so I can't even go try it. At what point does it rev? - when you're about to enter the new gear (e.g., if you go from 6 to 4, it must rev more than if you go from 6 to 5?) How many RPMS does it increase? Is it super smooth at all RPM ranges? Or does it only really work right at certain bands? I'm assuming this removes the need for heel and toe entirely?

Does the MT car have different power/torque numbers than the AT? What about the i vs the xi?

I was in a similar situation with no MTs within 1000 miles to go drive

It blips as you start to push the shifter into the gate for the next gear

Cant tell you how many revs it blips but its oddly "appropriate".....I'll pay attention next time I get into the car and try to let you know if someone else fails to chime in before then.

It really been odd....it really just "works" and I wouldnt change anything about it.....it really does eliminate the need for heel/toe gymnastics as far as I've noticed so far

Thanks...that's good to hear. It's really pushing me towards the MT.

Anyone know if there's a HP/TQ difference between MT and Auto? I thought I saw another thread that mentioned that.

Is this a feature on m240i's only or do the m235i's have it also? I am guessing this is only in Sport and Sport+. If so, I am still under 1500 miles on the odometer so I haven't been in Sport or Sport+ yet.

I don't know the answer to your questions, but I imagine sport and sport+ are different between MT and AT - in AT they change the shift points. But I don't know why it wouldn't be in the regular (non sport) mode.

Another thumbs up for the blip. It makes you feel like a hero every time you downshift. Always accurate/exactly when you want it.

I am curious if it can be disabled (Sport+ with traction off?) because it would be fun to heel-toe every now and then. But it really does make things easier so I like it when I'm just cruising around. Probably better for clutch wear as well since the computer is more precise/accurate than I am.

Good guess - disabled only when everything is off. I'm a die hard heel/toe and thought I'd be annoyed but....it's so damned convenient (and intelligent).

When summer rolls around and traction is plentiful I'll need to exercise my technique with systems off. Who knows...maybe I'll enjoy it on track as well. Save the manuals!

It's on in comfort mode as well and it's exact. When you go into gear to downshift it will auto blip. It's become so natural that I don't even think about it anymore. Only thing I noticed is that if while downshifting I need to clutch back in real quick such as if someone in front of me slows down all of a sudden will not auto blip because it's expecting you to go into neutral. You can either blip it manually or go back into neutral and back into gear and it will auto blip.

I wish I my m235i would have had this feature. That said, the 235 is much easier to heel and toe than was my MINI Cooper S, and I don't generally drive in such a manner that rev matching is all that important.

After driving the M2 for an extended period of time, which has the auto rev match, and I caught myself rev matching myself instead of letting the car do it. I wasn't too sure if I liked it or not. It may be something that I just have to get used to.

Would drive me mad, if I drive a manual I want to drive a manual. Heel toe is a good portion of the experience.

All autos rev match, hence auto. Yes no manual rev match in 235, thank god.

And so rewarding when properly executed!

I'd hate to get used to an auto blip, then drive another car without it. I think I could get used to it, but the whole reason I bought the car is because it was a "manual" lol...

I drove a 2017 Audi S3 Dual Clutch and a 2017 m240i ZF auto today the Audi S3 is definitely rev matching the throttle on downshifts (quite frankly the transmission was awesome) where the BMW felt slower with no rev match of the throttle. The BMW ZF definitely felt much better than my former 2012 328i Sport thought.

I meant rev matching on the 6spd is only on the m240i and not the m235i. As for rev matching on the automatics, it does, but not as smoothly as the DCTs.

Guess we'll just have to drive it in Sport+ with no traction nannies. Risking lives for the purist experience...that should be the new slogan for Save The Manuals.
