2022 M240i Exhaust Smoke, 5 Quarts Oil, 7,000 Miles

I could really use some advice on this. At just 2,300 miles, while crossing train tracks undergoing maintenance, I drove over some debris so small I didn't even notice it, but which managed to deal a death blow to my motor by stabbing into the oil cooler causing instant loss of all oil pressure resulting in a thrown main bearing. $30,000 and two months later (thankfully covered by collision in surance), I had a new engine installed by a local dealer.

All seemed welll until with about 7,000 miles on the new engine, I get a warning I'm down 2 quarts of oil. I immediately add one quart figuring that's plenty to get me to the dealer the next day. Then I drive literally across the street to a restaurant and my exhaust is blowing smoke like a steam engine. (Great way to impress someone on a second date!) Five short hours later, after midnight, the tow sent by BMW dops me at the dealer.

The dealer keeps the car 8 days, no loaner for even a day, replaces the valve cover, and declares the car fixed. I'm barely out of the parking lot when I can see the smoke still billowing out of the tailpipe. I bring it back to the dealer who says they can't get me back in until 10 days later. So, I'm driving like grandma, keeping the psi on the turbo under 5, which seemed to keep the smoke to a minimum. But a week later I'm again two quarts low on oil. I again add one quart thinking it'll cover the 25 miles to the dealer, but the smoking gets much worse and literally 30 minutes later I get the two quarts low warning again. This time I add two quarts and make it the few miles home and have it towed to the dealer in the morning.

I get a loaner this time, but the only repair they have done in another 8 days is replace an O2 sensor and they again declare it fixed, but they want to drive the car a couple hundred miles to be sure. They can't explain to me how an O2 sensor caused the engine to burn 3 quarts of oil in just a few hundred miles of driving. Is that possible or are they hiding some other screw up? It's gone through 5 quarts of oil in total. This is nuts.

I'll post a pic as soon as I figure out how!

New engine comes with a warranty, no?

No loaner, unacceptable!

No loaner and not keeping the car when it's spewing smoke in the parking lot, unacceptable! I would've pulled it to the garage door and left it there and dropped the keys on whoever the boss was at the place and immediately made a call to corporate!

O2 sensor has nothing to do with the operation of the engine other than fuel trims... That won't make smoke!

The VC gasket is throwing parts at a problem...

I would get all the ducks in order and take this to the highest levels. BBB complaint as well, social media complaint as well, etc...

But that's just me...

I like the idea of calling corporate. Do you mean BMW of North America?

In betweeen repair attempt 1 and 2, I decided to switch dealers and took it to another dealer. They kept it 4 days and then decided the dealer who installed the new engine had to fix it. At least they gave me a loaner, although it was a crappy VW Jetta.

It's been pretty frustrating.

Not sure how your state laws work but look into the "Lemon Law". If they are unable to repair the car after a certain amount to attempts you should be able to lemon it.

Hope it works out for you, that's a terrible experience.

In case anyone wants to know, its BMW of Delray Beach.

They replace the O2 sensor last Tuesday, and couldn't fit in a test drive until today. Guess what? It's still smoking like crazy. Morons can't tell the difference between cause and effect. All the burning oil probably fouled the sensor since there's no way an O2 sensor affects oil. All that oil can't be good for the catalytic converter either.

Can't understand if they installed a NEW replacement engine or one from a pick-n-pull... I would ask for invoices and make sure they show source of material and parts.

Yes, BMW of NA at first, and if that doesn't work, elevate it from there. Public Relations as a stock holder also gets wars listening...

And no, you replaced an O2 sensor and it takes a week to test drive? Really? There's something wrong here, to the 10th degree!

Not sure why one dealer wouldn't handle it when another dealer has already failed. Sending you back to that dealer is not assisting or helping in any way, hence why I would call corporate!

If you crap the bed, and ruin a repair, I'm not letting you touch the vehicle any more. I would inform the dealer if they don't have a loaner car, that I'm renting one and will take them to small claims for recovery post repair! It's not a courtesy, they made an error and are completely culpable! It's a horror story... Sorry you have to deal with that all. I've had nothing but great experiences so far with BMW. But in the past with other dealerships have had to go nuclear to get results!

Thanks. This is only their second attempt and they get three. I know that because I'm a lawyer and over 30 years ago I held the state record for the largest lemon law refund ever by getting a client a complete refund on their 8-series BMW because after three repair attempts to the AC, the AC failed again on a road trip with the kids to Disney in the summer! This can't be revenge 30 years later, can it?

Now its the Turbocharger

Yesterday, they decided the problem is in the turbocharger which brings up another sad tale with this car. I didn't think it was relevant,but at 2,300 miles I crossed some train tracks that were undergoing improvments. The must have left a tool behind because I hit something too small to see that speared my oil cooler dropping my oil pressure to zero and throwing a a main bearing.

Two months later I finally had a new engine which I thought came with a new turbo. Now I'm hearing for the first time that they put the original turbo back on the new block, and BMW is claiming that the turbo was damaged by the loss of oil at the same time . So now they won't repair it unless my insurance company pays for it. That's going to take a while. UFB.

BBB does absolutely nothing. It's like Yelp or Google reviews. You'd be better off describing the history of the work performed so far by the dealer with no resolution still to BMWNA. The website claims a turnaround time of one business day.

You should also post this in the G42/G87 forum. Perhaps this is a new issue on the G42, not F22.

Seems odd you’d have a new engine with new turbo burning oil already. I am not a fan of the digital oil measurement. Damn EPA and emissions eliminated the simple yet accurate dipstick.

What a sad story! My dealer experience with a punctured auxiliary radiator is 180 degrees different from yours.

If you are a BMWCCA member, contact the Ombudsman. They intercede with dealers and BMW NA on behalf of members. No guarantee, of course, but a great benefit of your $58 dues.
