Not sure if that's an M2. Kinda doubt it without the quad exhaust. But to answer why LA, tons of mfg mule in SoCal. I'm in big bear a lot and I've seen BMW and several other mules up there over the years. They cruise hard (really hard - I chased 3 new 5ers a few years ago) up the hill then back down the back side into the desert. Heck of a test in the summer.

They test reliability, durability, ride quality (various surfaces in different parts of the world and tires), handling etc. in various environmental conditions to mimic real world usage. Some tests can be performed in labs but the only way to get real world data is to drive until wheels fall off and record data. This way you monitor how the entire system is performing as well as individual components. This is called design verification and validation. In addition, the goal is to identify any major issues prior to releasing final configuration to mass market and try to avoid major recalls. Obviously, sometimes management and bean counters decide to rush a product to the market and cut corners. Most engineers don't approve that.

Not an M2... The rear fender matches with the standard side skirt and on the M2 prototypes it is a couple of centimeters off.

Looking at the width of those front tires, there is no way this is a standard-issue 228, or even an M235i...

Has everyone forgot about the 2 series that was caught testing equipment for the next z3 or whatever? Very possible they are using it again, perhaps not with a non lowered roofline, but still. Maybe the roofline is a tad lower. I can't tell.

Wait a sec now we should at least identify what kind of mule this is before we close the thread. If its not the M2 and we know the Z3 mule has different proportions, then what is it??

No M2 = no care as far as I'm concerned

The size of the tires leads me to believe that the car is something special, and the rear fenders look wider than an M235i, to me at least.

It doesn't need to have quad exhaust to be an M2 mule. Those tips are just for show. Its all a single muffler/ single exhaust set up.
