BMW marketing at work

I think they should move to pay-per-drive model.

In the morning, you put in your credit card, pick your output, pay that amount and you're off.

LCD screens on the rear bumper put the appropriate tag on the car.

Feel feisty- pay $100 for the day- M3 displays on the trunk.
End of the month- only got $20- 320i displays out back.

And the car drives accordingly.

I am getting M badges on my ECU connector, trunk hydraulics, and a few for the undercarriage.

Why not slap an ///M badge on the back of you E90 and call it day?
Enjoy your new M.

This irritates me because I like things to be consistently named! I understand the x25i/28i/30i and x35i on the previos models with the N52 and N54/55 which both had the same displacement. However, Now we have a 2.0 4cyl in the 228i. This is a great opportunity to fix the names of their model line up. So you name the 228i the 220i, and the 235i the 230i. Considering there is no N52 (unforunately), this sounds like it could be done across the line. But then again, the average sheep consumer is pretty dumb and won't understand why they are paying more money for a lesser model number; or why the latest year car has a lesser model number than the previous year. Oh well, BMWs gotta sell cars right?

My family has had two of the best ///M cars ever - the Z4MC and E46 M3. Those cars are on another planet compared to the 235. They felt like race cars - you could feel the freaking car working on you in a physical manner. And yes I have omitted the M from the 235 because it's stupid for this car to be designated in any way that suggests it's similar to one of those previously mentioned cars.

Additionally, I also understand that "M performance" is a limp wristed manner by which you can think you're getting a step closer to a real M. You just aren't in reality.

It's soft, squishy, overweight and devoid of any type of real feel. The engine is boring and not special in any way. There's no sense of pantomime or exceptional purpose in any way. In fact, to me, a standard issue N54 135 is a much better driver's car - and yes, I have owned both.

It has a real cool engine tweak for 20 extra BHP though ! Lol...eye roll.

A "real" M feels different. And special. Because it IS different and special. And has the chops to prove it. Not some half-assed attempt with 17 badges and blue brakes to try and fool the masses.

If the M2 is like the 1M, my faith will be restored. If the M2 is a massaged 235...well I will just move on.
Dude, I think you need to just relax a little. I have not heard anyone say their m235i is one of the all time greatest BMWs and it will be a collector's car in the future. It is what it was marketed as, an enthusiasts version (how it would be optioned) of a 2 series to build a following and marketing for the M2, which I too hope is one of those all time BMWs. The e46 m3 was and is one of the best driver's cars around and you were lucky to have parents that let you enjoy their passion for cars. Why can't we just appreciate that while everything in the general market is telling BMW to make bigger, softer, more luxurious vehicles, they threw us the 2-series that has some great potential. Although I agree that M's feel different and the M235i falls somewhere below that, but it feels better than my e90 and really is a joy to drive. You also obviously know how readily available extra power is from this engine. Sorry its not the N54, but you could have had 335is. Also in this endless debate about M v. Non-M where does the e92 M3 fit when the m235i is right on par. While the the new M3/4 are amazing cars and the difference between the m235i would be evident on the track, in terms of pure fun on the road, it would be a hard call of which car to go with. Everyone just needs to lighten up and let the m235 be that and not the non-m2.

The E30 M3 with it's stock wide body kit. The E36 M3 with that great 6 cyl motor and suspension that was far better than a 325. The E34 M5 (still one of my favorite M cars) The E46 M3 and E86 Z4M both amazing handling cars that keep a smile on your face even by thinking of driving it. The emotion and history that emanates from the word M was truly sublime but now it's not used only on these special models I alluded to above.

All these were special cars that signified what M was all about. Those were the dreams of many young boys and girls to own one. Then we get older and the M is everywhere and over saturated as if it's not that special anymore. It's not exclusive anymore because you can buy an amazingly fantastic car like the M235i or the M135i or whatever else they decide to produce and slap an M badge from stick on but it's not a real M.

So I am confused and a little disheartened because of the future of the diluted M name.

So while I see your point about it being a great car and that the performance is amazing and like I said I Love my M235i but it is NOT a true M car.

But like you said this topic has been beaten to death.
The M cars are made by Motorsport. They have a different vin code. That won't change.

So...I have owned my 2015 M235i with xDrive for over a month now, and love it. I have always lusted after an M but two things have held me back...price and lack of all wheel drive.

I live in the Northeast and while price may not be as much of an issue, all wheel drive is because it has to be a daily driver. I have one garage stall and that's occupied by a 1990 Corvette ZR-1 that I will not sell no matter how badly I want a new M4. So the M235i fit what I was looking for. The damn thing is faster than my ZR-1...not by much but faster...and it will out handle it. So, I feel like given the reviews in the magazine's and the performance comparison to the E46 M3...I've come close to getting whatever it is you want to argue makes a true "M" car. I will, someday get the M4 I've always wanted, but for now, at least I feel like like I'm in a true M. At the end of the day, it comes down to nomenclature semantics.

OK I read the entire thread here about the pissin contest between M and non M but does anyone know when the M240 will be able to be ordered in the US? And we are assuming it is 350-360 HP? 340 lb. ft. area?

In 2011 the average speed of the winner at the Daytona 500 was 130 mph. Does that make the 2 Series a Daytona car?

There is nothing to add on the ///M marketing debate, all been said before hundreds of times! It's happening, let's just deal with it and realise it's the same trick Audi, VW and Merc use to signify their second to top model...

However some of the new engines coming from the VW group are of significance and BMW will have to up their game when they go with the B engines for the 30 and 40 models and their diesel brethren:

- Porsche's imminent 911 turbo engines sound as though they will be a force to be reckoned with.
- VW are readying a 4 pot diesel with more BHP than a 330d
- Audi are toying with electric turbo charging on a diesel to go into an RS5
- VW are going to produce a 400bhp+ 4 pot petrol for the Golf 400R

Game is on

+1 no one around me in Germany cares that I have this machine. Even my M3 friends. They accept it for what it is and know BMW named it and did not intend to upset M owners etc.
If you like an M car buy it. If you like the M235i or another derivative that is good to. Its all personal choice. The lack of intelligence in this thread is very funny. The overt ego is depressing and confirms how many BMW people are to be avoided as they cannot see beyond a badge.
Funny how many times you can spend less and go faster than many M cars. Speed is not exclusive to M or BMW. One day you die and none of this matters and being concerned about a naming convention means one should get a life.

Drive more, live more, post less and be nice to other people. M car or not.

Dude, I'm not excited so relaxing isn't necessary.

I have had the 235 for about 8 months now, and think that I have enough experience to talk about where it falls short for me, hence the post that you quoted.

Additionally, criticism of the car does not mean there's a lack of understanding on my part as to what BMW is trying to do with this car. I merely think they have missed the mark. But I appreciate your "teachings" above. Dialogue is why we are on the forums - I just refuse to praise the car at each and every turn. Which is what I see a lot of on the 2er page.

Does it do some things well ? Yes, of course. Just not enough of the things I was looking for when I made the decision to get one. Is that subjective ? Absolutely. But that's why the discussion is fun.

The M owners out there who care that the M235i has an M in its name need to get over it. So what? You can't control how BMW names or markets a vehicle and it is an awesome car.

On the other hand, when one or two of you starts bashing M owners because our cars cost more and retain more value and imply it's all for nothing then you are misguided.
