The "is" cars like my 335is generally only have improvements focused on making them accelerate more quickly and look and sound better. There are absolutely zero changes to the braking or handling of the 335is compared to the 335i except for some slightly stiffer engine mounts. So, to me, the M Performance cars like the M235i represent a move towards offering something in between the standard series car and the full M model just like Audi has always done with their S models. The M235i has upgraded bushings, springs, dampers, tires, brakes, and recalibrated power steering on top of its additional power and sound. Most of those things can be ordered on a standard 2 series but you get a really well set up package when you get it all together in the form of the M235i. When you adjust for inflation, the M235i barely costs any more today than the 135is did last year despite offering so much more for the driver. I think it's an incredible car for the money. |

The actual answer to your question though is very simple: M cars are manufactured by BMW M GmbH. Cars like the M3 and M5 are manufactured by BMW M GmbH. Even some cars that did not begin with "M" have been actual "M" cars (literally produced by M GmbH): the E31 850CSi and the 1-Series M Coupe are two examples. Cars like the M235i and M135i are not produced by M GmbH. This doesn't make them worse cars in any way. Both of these cars are fantastic in their own right; it shouldn't irk owners that they weren't produced by M GmbH. With that said, it's simply factual that they weren't produced by M GmbH, so there's no point in pretending that they are. Ultimately, the car itself should be far more important to someone than who made it, but snobbery abounds. |

[QUOTE=BobbyP;16929372]Basically, BMW is responding to:
Mercedes with the new C300 and C400's & Audi's R and RS designations Honestly, whatever...... BMW in the 80's had the 325e, 325es, 325i, 325is, for all 2 and 4 door models. In the 90's, BMW went to "is" for the 3 series coupes, in the 2000's it became "ic" for the coupes, and later shared the same with the 4 doors until the the 3 & 4 were recently created. I believe BMW started fudging names on displacement in the '90's so that's been ongoing for 20 years. QUOTE] More like 35 years. The last e21 320i's had 1.8l engines. Then both the e30 325e and e28 528e had the same 2.7l engine. And so on, and so on. I'm with you - who cares? At least BMW's names make logical sense, unlike Acura, Infiniti, and Lincoln. I know where a 230i stands in the lineup vs. a 440i. I have no idea what a TLX is in relation to an RDX, or an MKZ in relation to an MKT. And Q-what-the-heck-is-that?

I find it very telling that this story about new engines generated a thread mostly about the badge on the trunk lid.

annnnnnnnd bmw marketing is at it again.. here we are complaining how the 2er isnt selling and its because its over priced and now bmw goes and changes the badge number to justify a soon to be announced 1k price increase across the board.
still very very curious how they roll the cost of putting the mandatory back up camera in the cars will play out. i think you are going to see the modding community shift from the 3er to the 1er sedan when it comes out.

Reading these types of comments, "my car built today is almost as fast as an M built two years ago, thus, is my car not worthy of an M badge?" Leave me scratching my head. I think it would do quite a few some good to read a few of the articles of just how much goes in to making a car an M car. And technology used in cars introduced today is old news in the industry, future models/tech are already well in the works.

Comparing the performance of a new car to one that is 6 years old is hilarious.

What I fail to understand with BMW is why the 2 and 5 series get these M Performance variants, while the 3/4 series is just called the M Sport.
From what I can tell, the M235/M550d are essentially the top of the line series production cars with all of the M Sport bits already included. Please do correct me if I am wrong though since I haven't really looked into either of these 2 cars. |

In the 80's in Europe they had the e28 M535, but in the US they rebadged it as the 535is. Both of those models were a notch below the M5. So you could say that the M235 is going back to their roots. Dropping the "is" badges (or "si" for some models like the Z4) and going back to the old Euro school seems fine to me.

I don't think M235 or M240 is a bad idea, as long as they don't call it M2. It's no different than Mercedes offering an AMG package on regular cars or Audi offering an S-Package.
What I do find unacceptable are M-Performance mods for an M car! If I'm getting an M3/M4, why do I need to pay extra for a better M-Performance exhaust? An M car should already come with all the M parts since it's an M car! Give me a break... |

That's all I was saying. And I know, again, that M Performance doesn't = M and all that. But BMW started the marketing for this car with "faster than the 1M" mumbo jumbo...and since I bought the car without driving it, I guess you could say that I feel like it hasn't delivered to the level that I expected. For the record, my 235 doesn't sound like the one in the video with the M3 - perhaps my active sound is broken? And it hasn't been universal praise for this car - check out the Performance Car of the Year comments from Road and Track, which basically mimic my overall complaint: "On that long, tree-canopied downhill run, however, the M235i feels short on brakes, and I get the distinct feeling that there's a bit too much dignity, too much ball-bearing smoothness, to make this a true successor to the raucous 135i. Web Editor Alex Kierstein agrees. "Good mechanical grip. No drama … sadly, no drama." http://www.roadandtrack.com/features...ar-of-the-year

But I had a couple of E92s and E82s as well - my pops and I used to go to cars and coffee on the north side quite a bit.

Oh, and I love the M235i and can not wait for the M2. To me, it is sized/proportioned perfectly, and I will have one in my stable as well (just hopefully not too close to my non-M cars, would hate to take the wrong car to the grocery store) Regards, Chris |
