All the people that started defending the M235i on my "not real M car comment" really need to start understanding what sarcasm is...... This forum is way too defensive.
Only reason I posted that JOKE(see what I did there ) is because everybody is whining about all the M badges and how its "not a REAL M car" I have a deposit down for a M235i XDrive for ED in April. It's an amazing car, and it deserves the recognition.

I have an M2 on deposit so please spare me the typical "new sheriff in-town" bullshit.

Speed doesn't matter.
The experience and the beautiness is what matters. Can't beat 8000+ rpm. Especially the facelift models. Yes, next to it is a E39 M5 Silverstone. |

I agree, the E46 is iconic. But 13 years from now we might be driving around in golf carts.

i love the m235 but doesn't everyone agree that the E46 M3 is the most beautiful coupe from BMW to date ? We are comparing a car released in 2000 some 14 years ago to the M235 and all we can find is that it got beat by 4 secs !! .... and we will continue to compare the E46 M3 with the M2 when that comes out. I think the E46 M3 is embarrassing the M235 and M2 and not other way round.

I like the M3 much better. I sure miss mine with the CSL roof
Not to mention, when you lift the hood, the E46 M3's engine is pure sex. Now they just give you a big plastic cover. No comparison

I used to own a porsche 356 t6 b coupe - 1962. It made 60 bhp and rocked the sports car market for handling, aesthetic and power to weight in its day. Now a 1999 Corolla could beat it in the 1/4 and an S class Benz would murder it on lateral acceleration.
People don't buy vintage Porsche, Ferrari or, dare I say, M cars for their capability verse modern comparables. |

I know where the E46 M3 lost those 4 seconds. If that car has only ~4500 miles, then it probably still has the original tires on it, which by now are hockey pucks, due to age and heat cycles. The only fair comparison would be to have both cars on equivalent tires. Anybody that tracks their car knows how much of a difference a tire can make. For those that don't.......4 seconds a lap is not uncommon.
The e46 M3 is timeless and still my favorite BMW I have ever owned. Still miss her: |

My E46 M3 Cabriolet was my favorite car of them all...More than the E92 M3.
Miss it everyday...

Have seen nothing out of BMW in many years that is as true to it's roots as the M235i. I'm not talking about shooting for the moon with an i8, a 5,000 pound GT/SUV or an $80k+ M4. I'm talking about a reasonably-priced car that is sharp, sporty as all get out, moderately priced and a howl to drive. Years from now we'll have the M division still building the no-compromise iron they build….at stratopheric prices. The I division will continue perfecting the modern new world of hybrids and the small BMW's will all share their FWD platform with 5 flavors of Mini Coopers (sniff!). But we'll all look back and remember how this little M235i that vastly improved upon the 1 series before it, thumbed its nose at the venerable E46 M3, roasted it's competition in most comparisons, got nothing but stunning reviews by the press, was an absolute party to drive and didn't break the bank. It may pale if the M2 gets everything right, but it might possibly be one of the statement BMW's of this entire decade. |

In my opinion, M235 styling is not even in the same universe as e46. In fact, how many other circa 2001 cars hold up as well? As previously stated, the e46 M3 is iconic in a way that I don't see a 235 approaching. Yes, the car is more capable...but not necessarily more compelling.
I do look forward to the M2. If the styling and steering engagement are improved, it might be my next BMW keeper |
