Anything less than Sport on this car is blasphemy. It's a $50,000 high performance sports car.. a difference of 5 mpg might let you go another 50 miles.... for me, that's about a days of worth of driving, I don't care so much because I'd be filling up the night before anyway! Enjoy the car for what it is supposed to be!!!!

I would argue that driving in my conditions (winter, cold, slippery) with Winter tires, that you ALWAYS drive with it in sport tranny at least.

You do not want the comfort tranny "lurching" on you. You want the throttle very sensitive and not the "jab-wait-go" that the comfort seems to do.

No sudden spin ups.

Sport vs Comfort changes the throttle mapping. You are effectively multiplying the amount of throttle applied when using sport mode. Your ability to use small amounts of throttle (to minimize acceleration and fuel used to accelerate) is diminished which is why your fuel economy will suck.

It is no different then driving in comfort 24-7 but hammering the throttle.

I leave my F30 sport settings to "Chassis only" which gives me the heavier steering and stiffer suspension benefits without the touchier throttle. If I need more throttle, my right foot knows where to find it.
I thought the drivetrain was only effecting the gear choices in automatic (and when you had a manual it didn't do anything). Good to know it effects throttle sensitivity as well...Didn't know that

Had my car for a week, my commute has been mostly stop and go traffic on comfort mode. The bad quality picture says it all.

Ok, be sure to clear everything on your next fill up and start from "0". This seems a bit excessive for fuel consumption even on the M235i. There is a big penalty for Sport mode for sure, but should not be that big. I have the 228i. I will get 22 MPG on day to day, stop n go city driving in sport mode. That goes up to 27 MPG in Comfort mode driving the same roads. I have tested this over several tanks of gas, always from the same station. Its pretty consistent!

I also own a 228i and I agree it is consistent. Consistently not near as good as the EPA. I do about 70% city 30% highway. I mostly use Comfort, except for those times I want that burst of speed in Sport or Sport+ (i.e., not rare, just "occasional"). I'm getting about 24-25 mpg. Better than the 23 for city advertised, but was expecting a little better. If I keep it in Sport mode, I'm lucky to get 22 mpg. Would like to do a long trip to test out the highway mpg though. And btw, I do reset every trip.

Well I have gotten 36 mpg on a 110 mile trip averaging between 60-65 mph.

guess my question is, if you're in day to day, stop n go city traffic, why are you in sport mode? Wouldn't comfort mode make more sense under those conditions?

Last week I kept the car mostly in ECO mode to see how far I could stretch a tank. I would only put the car in Sport+ only when merging onto on/off ramps. My round trip commute is 47 miles with various changes in elevation. I was able get 313 miles with the computer estimating that I had another 27 miles left. That's a tad over 25mpg. Compared to my E92 M3 this thing is a Prius.

I do agree that ECO and Comfort mode do not exactly inspire "confidence" but when stuck in traffic or cruising along at highway speeds it's fine. A quick shift to the left on the gear selector (auto) is enough to get the revs you need to pass slower traffic.

I'm currently averaging about 13.5 mpg in my 228. The car is still in its break in period (it is currently around 1000km) and is almost all city driving in comfort. Does the mileage get any better?

I'm getting 28.0 flat on my 228i with over 10K miles on the car now. 50 mile round-trip commute with 90% on the freeway with moderate stop-n-go for about 10 miles of that.

Free-way is Eco mode, streets are Sport.

Agreed. Other than extremes i really don't understand these mileage threads.

My city/highway combo ranges between 28 and 30 mpg, highway 34-35 with our 428iX in comfort. I use eco on the highway and sport for merges, on ramps etc.. You guys must really be pumping the pedal.

I get about 23 mpg in a 50 mile commute bumper to bumper. And in Eco mode on my M235i. Still get about 300 miles a tank though

Have 6000 miles on my 228 M-Sport auto. Drove about 100 miles on highway with cruise set on 70 mph in comfort mode and got 37 mpg! One thing to check is tire pressure. Now that it is getting cold, your tire pressure may be too low. This trip was right after I set the tire pressures back to the specified values. Never tried it in ECO.

I'm not knocking the fuel economy, I was merely curious to see where everyone else was shaking out. Further, I wanted to see whether BMW's claims are accurate.

I'm at about 2300 miles. Average is 16.6 mpg. Pretty disappointing to me as I haven't even been driving it that hard. 70% of the time, I'm in normal drivetrain mode.

My sunroof has startled rattling too. That's in addition to the subs cutting out and Bluetooth being spotty.

Not impressed.

It's very strongly dependent on driving conditions. I actually went through something similar when I first got the car. I initially only used it to drive around Chicago in heavy traffic at night. My avg was 11.5 mpg, I kid you not. I freaked out and thought that there was something wrong with my engine. I'm at 5.5k miles now, and have used it quite a bit to commute to work (70% highway). I'm up to 21 mpg which I'm happy about. I do a decent amount of "spirited" driving here and there, so I'm not expecting it to get any better. I've gotten 35 mpg on highways in eco pro.

Also, I would get anything and everything replaced while still under warranty. I had the dreaded exhaust rattle, as well as a squeaky right paddle shifter. Took it to the dealership and had it all replaced within the week. No issues at all after that.

Nice. That's good to hear. I'll take it in soon to have them look at the other things. Thanks for the info.

MPG is HEAVILY dependent on driving style, the traffic you drive in, temperature, how long your drives are, if the engine is cold or warm between drives, grades, wind, etc.

15-18 mpg is not uncommon for a M235 in pure city driving, especially heavy stop and go and short trips (10 miles or less). Reset the mpg gauge and go take a long uninterrupted highway drive for 50+ miles and set the cruise between 65-75mph. I bet you'll see 26-30 mpg.

I drive up/down a 3000ft grade each day. I can't remember the last lime I hit 500k kms on a single tank aside from long road trips. Either way, I save fuel coming down the hill, and spend it going up. I feel for the size of tank, and the amount of WOT I'm not far off of our stage 2 GTI which is making far more TQ than this car and has an additional 10L of fuel capacity.

GTI gets 520km/55L tank
235 gets 400-450/45L tank?

All in all, I'm good with it. If I wanted more MPG's I'd stay away from German cars in general. I find any car with great MPG is an absolute dog to drive, and usually isn't German in breed

you said bumper to bumper traffic and you are in break in stage still. In your situation I would be using the auto stop/start feature. Bumper to bumper traffic will rape any cars mpg unless u have a hybrid. To compare, my 235 is manual and rear drive, I drive mostly city, sit in sport + almost the entire time, and my cars average is in the 25mpg range. My commute is nice and light though.
