Are they going to adjust the number of slashes before the "M" in the M2 and M4? The people want to know! //M2 //|M235i ///M3 ////M4 /////M5 //////M6?

I don't necessarily care about the opinions of people who spout nonsense without actually doing any research. The M235i is an incredible car for the money and, personally, I like the M Performance trim levels and think M235i is an appropriate name for the car.

I love my E92 M3 but I would happily have an M235i as my only car, an M240i with more power can only be even more of a great thing.

I don't remember people being upset, however it WAS a totally new model. It's not like they took the previous model year 330 and changed the number, or did some minor incremental improvement. They brought in a twin turbo, which was a bit novel at the time. It felt like a new model, not a regular iteration. I'm sure people who just bought 330s though were a bit peeved, that can't be helped.

Indeed.

Still makes me chuckle how many folks here get outright perturbed about the NAME of the car. Everyone's panties in a twist because there's a letter in front of the name. Holy commotion, Batman! Thread after thread with the grumpy old guard, arms crossed over their chests growling how that M letter shouldn't be there.

-It has numbers virtually identical with the previous M3 and 1 Series M.
-It's got the highest rating Consumer Reports has ever given a Bimmer. Ever.
-Widely heralded in almost every magazine review as an amazing return to roots for BMW.
-Racer Randy Pobst says it's the best BMW he's driven in 10 years.

It can *almost* corner with a Cayman, has near super-car acceleration, seats 4 in a pinch, gets 32mpg, won't rattle your teeth as a daily driver, looks great and costs less than $45k. Look around folks, there aren't many premium cars anywhere that can say this. And certainly no stablemates in the BMW fold.

No, it wasn't hand-assembled with track-rated components by a guy named Gunther in the M division, but based on the above, I could care less what letter of the alphabet they put on it.

Let the Audi S/RS, MB AMG and BMW M division's play their naming games for marketing purposes.
Who cares, as long as we're getting gems like the M235i out of their mess?

Yup this. M235i maybe best value or fun car per pound/dollar in the range right now.

But that's exactly what happened. The top of the line model in the E90's first MY was the 330i. It wasn't until the second year that the N54 was introduced and BMW renamed the 330i to the 335i.

Same thing is happening now. The N55 is being replaced with the B58, and as such, the cars that are getting that new engine also get a new model designation.

BMW has been doing this for years and years, following in Mercedes' footsteps. The company has a lot to be criticized for, but this isn't one of them.

i think it'd be close.

if you really think about it, maybe the best value per dollar, is a 228i m-sport , track pack, with a tune since you can save dollars on some of the extras that are base on the m235i

but yeah, its right there in fun per dollar especailly given the 2 series is reasonably practical compared to almost anything else in the $45k and less range that is "fun"

no disrespect, as i really like the looks and performance of the M235i, but this model should be been named the 235is, because it falls in line with all the previous "is" models in BMW's past.......like a slight bump in HP and a few extra aesthetic items compared to the standard models.

i know its gets confusing for most people that are not very familiar with BMW's history, but unfortunately its BMW's marketing dept. coming up with "solutions" to segment cars at certain price points and also compete with the like of Audi and MBZ.

It was named M235i and no amount of crying, 'should have been..', 'will be...' will change that or their reasoning for doing so... as evidenced by the forthcoming M240i.

Disagree, love them. You seem so sentimentally attached to things of the past that you are completely overlooking what a great car you are driving around every day. I mean go out and detail the car drive it up to a beautiful place and take some pics and tell me you didn't have a blast? It is NOT intended to be the exact same as an E46, or a 135. The 2 is my favorite design from BMW in quite a while. If rawness is really what you want, get coils, tune, mod, away until it is the way you want it, or wait for the M2. The car is what it is. I was also a 135 N54 owner, and have had 3 E46s, so it isn't like I don't understand what you are talking about, it is that I understand that it is just a new car with different characteristics. It is quite simple, if you liked the older ones more, get them. I personally think you will be overlooking a lot of the great things they are doing with it though. The styling alone, is definitely something to write about. I mean even Chris Harris and all of the track guys are just loving the 2. Go drive a C class around for a while or some of the competition in class, and I bet you will appreciate it a lot , lot more.

Seriously, Who cares about the marketing. It is literally just a label for the Americanized masses. The car is still what the car is. If people really don't like the M that much, grab the blow dryer, and remove the M. Blame the masses and Audi/MB/BMW soccer moms for this one.

Even I perfectly know most of you are not familiar with the 220 model, Will it be an engine swap for it too? a rename (225 perhaps) ?
I personally own the vehicle (not a lease) and plan to keep it for 5-6 years and should not care, but for the re-sale Price IT IS an issue in my hometown!

As much as we like BMW's history, we should also be aware of BMW's vision for the future.

You might benefit from reading up on BMW's plans for the "M Performance" line which you will find on the M Division's "Powered by M" website.

http://m-power.com/_open/s/varlink1.jsp?id=2713&lang=en

It goes beyond marketing.

You don't drive an M so why the shit do you care? You also don't drive an M235 and it's unfortunate since it just made Car and Driver top 10 and same at Automobile magazine. Your just jealous and you'll get over it eventually.

Is it a good assumption that M240i engine will be more powerful than the current M235i engine?
