General questions as I prepare for my new ride.
Hi everyone. I'm putting my 2005 GTI 1.8T/5MT out to pasture and replacing her with a 228i M-Sport X-Drive with THP . I was just informed by my BMW dealer that my new steed is getting it's finishing touches on the production line. I'm hoping that I'll have my new whip in a couple weeks. With that being said I wanted to know a few things I hope the community can help me out with:
1) I want to dyno the car soon after I get it. Is there a period of time I should wait before running the dyno or can I get it done right away? That leads me to my next question... 2) ...can I get the dyno done with snow tires? Will that effect the numbers in any way? I was planning on getting some blizzaks slapped on at the dealer upon arrival...we've been getting good snow here in south Michigan. 3) I'm looking into getting either the Stage 1 or JB4 Tunes from BMS. Can anyone who has either if these tunes for the N20 comment on observed changes in fuel economy? 4) For my own edification, does having AWD mitigate some of the 'need' for a limited slip differential? I know that it isn't even available for the 228i. However, from what I understand the LSD really only makes a difference when pushing the car to the limits on the track (correct me if I'm wrong). I like spirited driving on a daily basis and am pretty aggressive (17 speeding tickets with the GTI and an A4 before her, most from my younger days street racing on Hwy 280 and associated on/off ramps back in the SF Bay Area) but I don't ever push the car to it's limits and I have never been on a track, and doubt I will ever be, much. I feel, theoretically, if I were to get an LSD it would largely go to waste for me. 5) Accessories - Radar detector. Dash cam. Some sort of container made from the same material as the weather proof floor mats for transporting the occasional beverage (I bring my nurses copious amounts of coffee and treats once or twice a week...gotta keep the troops happy). Weather proof floor and trunk mats (prefer not to get these through BMW, too marked up). Recommendations? Thanks for your collective wisdom folks. |

I can answer question one, you have a 1200 mile break in period where you should not exceed 4500 rpm. I would hold off until after break in.
Number 5, look at Weathertech http://www.weathertech.com/bmw/2015/...s-all-weather/ |

If you have X drive the software will make the car understeer anyhow so no you shouldn't ( and likely cant) install the lsd with Xdrive. It is not optimized for track performance like the X5M with torque vectoring so it wont do anything. As for number 2 your tires will not affect your dyno at all unless somehow they suck so hard that they slip on the rollers... Which they wont. Get the BMW mats, but buy them from someone like get bmw parts. TBH i bought mine over the counter at my dealer and it was cheaper than my volkswagen mats before JB4 will reduce fuel economy, but you probably should care about that if you are planning performance mods anyways... As for tints and "aero" aesthetic mods whatever floats your boat. I hear stripes at 10 horsepower I think that covers all of your points over the 4 posts. Also what DanG said about breakin... |
