I would understand where your going if this were a 228i vs a 235i, but the M235i is going to have a better suspension, very possible better steering, exhaust, and for manual drivers a better gear box. So its not just the engine. If it was just the engine I would agree the 228i would be the obvious better deal.

Depending on what roads you are driving during your commute, the 228i MSport may be better. For example, if your drive mostly highway, how much will the extra performance bits of the M235i help compared to not having the tech/lucury items? Not to mention the bonus of better MPG, lower purchase price and insurance costs.

Only you can answer that really- for me all the tech goodies in the world won't compensate for an engine that I loathe the sound of when driven even somewhat aggressively. So I'm pretty sure I'll still prefer my almost stripper 128 over a loaded 228. M235 is the only one (well 2 actually) that makes sense to me and the only new BMW I'd even want to own anymore. If you want the tech stuff, wait, save and add it to the M235 IMO.

Despite the comments on here, the poll is pretty close so far. I just keep coming back to the money as well haha. I started out considering a Mini Cooper S, then a GTI, accord, and ended up back in BMW land. Its hard to give up BMW. I don't think that i could unless I really had to. |

N20 is an International Engine of Year award winner.
It is a fantastic engine, especially now it will be in a proper small car. Definitely can have loads of fun in a tuned 228i. |

the N20's goal is to be efficient. it's not meant to be fun or interesting...it's meant to be efficient. |

That's your opinion but doesn't make it a fact. Every car magazine that has tested a 3 series with the N20 have been extremely impressed with the performance. It smokes a Caddy ATS with their 4 cyl turbo and in fact was as fast as their 3.6 in some tests. Just because the sound doesn't sound like a Ferari is meaningless. I have the N20 in an X1 and it flys and greatly outperforms the NA 3.0 BMW made for years which I owned several times. Not everyone wants a N55. I have a N54 in a 3 series and I'm impressed with the N20.

I'll reserve final judgement until I drive a 228i but that N20 is guilty until proven innocent in my book. To each his own but I'm really not a fan it feels, sounds and delivers like an appliance. Oh it gets the job done no question there but did you enjoy it, do you want to keep driving just to drive? That's how I feel in my 1 and not in anything I've driven with the N20. The X1 was ok but the mileage claim is complete crap so to me in well equipped form the 35i was the choice there too. That said I ended up with a loaded Mazda CX5 and I'll use the 10k I saved to replace the 1 when its time.

Even in stock form, a 228i 0-60 in 5.4 is quick (E36 M3 numbers). |

Tell that to Bimmerworld, they are switching to the N20 powered 328i for the next 5-6 seasons in the Continental Tire Series. |

@Blipit: Absolutely, I never said it wouldn't be capable, it will be plenty quick and certainly have a weight advantage on the M235, I've just found it very non-aesthetically pleasing to flog (if that makes any sense) which is unfortunate.

You guys, I have the N26 engine in my 328...it may be pretty quick with my JB4 and E85, BUT, it is just not that fun to drive, partially because it sounds like crap.
When I transition to the M235i, there's no doubt in my mind that it will put a smile on my face, if not only for the 6cyl sound. And about bimmerworld...of course they are going to transition to the N20/N26, its lighter. Duh!

What does it have to do with then? Weight distribution? A change in racing "class"? Cost?

As a related but side issue, I drove the new 428i Coupe yesterday at a BMW dealer "drive" day. Only a brief 20 min drive, little urban and some more open hiway. I was impressed with the power, and quickness, of the N20 in the heavier 4 Series. They did not have a 435i on hand to compare to. Regardless, the 4 is not a car I would buy, too large for my tastes.
Would I get the N20 in the 2 Series? Maybe, I would have to drive it first; BUT I would be more likely to get the N55 a la M235i just because one can never have too much power I think the N20 is a very good engine, and may make for a better DD than the larger engine, for some ppl.
