CarPlay is here...

Picked up my M240i this morning and the guys at the dealer suggested having a look in the Connected Drive store and....

Top Option listed is Apple CarPlay for a £235 one off payment.

I'm in the Highlands with so-so reception and fish and chips to eat so I'll post pics the evening.

Important note: the OP is in the UK, so his car (and the Connected Drive store) has a different spec than North American cars. CarPlay may not be an option in the U.S. or Canada through Connected Drive.

Connected Drive offerings are vastly different between the EU and NA. Until we have verification on U.S.- and Canada-spec cars, this isn't gospel in those markets.

I'm having fun trying to get my existing Connected Drive account to connect to the new car (still waiting on the message getting to the car to confirm the link) but here it is clear as day Apple CarPlay.

I suspect this will be for people who have the hardware, but weren't able to spec it, or didn't spec it initially Like the online entertainment.

P.S. I going to do a homage to the "European Delivery" threads which you guys in the states, which we don't get as an option (booo! I'd love to go the BMW Welt).

Hmm I've tried to but it a couple of times and it let's me go all the way through the process and then at the final step it fails saying "an error occurred please try again later".

Hmm perhaps it's not quite ready yet? I'll keep trying. (hopefully BMW aren't charging for each of these attempts...)

I added Apple CarPlay to my build as a factory option but it would be interesting if it only requires a software update for any 2017 model and no additional hardware to be installed.

In general, Wireless CarPlay requires both Bluetooth and Wifi so I'm curious if some builds that go this route will only support the wired option or not.

I have the wifi hotspot (and enhanced Bluetooth with wireless charging), so won't be able to test that.

Interestingly the BMW apps now appear to work wirelessly, which they didn't in my 5 series.

I have those options as well. At least you should be able to confirm that CarPlay works wirelessly... Once you can install it that is.

Still no joy. Though I've been having issues with this car joining my existing connected drive account. The security message doesn't get through.

I called BMW cust service and they are manually going to add the car to my account.

Once all that is working I'll attempt the Carplay purchase again.

Of course you have to buy Nav/Tech Package to get Carplay, because BMW.

Stopped trying. Did a cost/benefit analysis and it has less functionality that my Apple Watch so reckoned the cash was better used elsewhere.

Will review again in the future.

NA is apparently getting the Connected Drive option for CarPlay sometime around January

I personally don't understand the hype. You have to have nav to get CarPlay, and BMW's nav has been good enough for me to not want to us my phone's data and app for maps... and my music goes over via Multimedia without a hitch too. I'm not sure what else would make CarPlay cool...?

Better integration for contacts and messages...

But An Apple Watch already does that and I can check what e-mail just pinged in, which you can't on CarPlay.

Also the enhanced integration for maps and destinations on the new Connected app does away with some of the benefits of using Apple Maps.

TBH I was in gadget seduction mode when I was considering it.

£235 could be put towards a new Apple watch when it comes out, or an Upgrade to iPhone 7, or a PS4 Neo, or a Nest Thermostat for my flat. All of which I would use more often.

Nothing at the moment. I've ordered it because I'm hoping apple will start approving more applications for carplay. It'd be nice to have Waze running on idrive display or a valentineone app or a performance app connected to odbc, etc...
