Sorry, but I don't think it's going to out-accelerate my street legal Z1000 Kawasaki, unless it runs quicker than a 10.38 1/4 mile.

Full disclosure: there are plenty of literbikes faster than mine.

The ultimate motorcycle though is the Kawasaki H2. Here's a video of one destroying such cars as the Bugatti:

Nope, but I just picked the car up- and it's sitting at 25k, figured there were some high milers out there blazing the way to my future headaches.

Yes there are ... like the Renegade-piped, Ohlins-equipped Aprilia SL1000 Falco I had a number of years ago (GRIN!). That said, the Z1000's a great all-rounder ...

... but as bikes go, five figures new isn't "cheap", and the SV's pretty much the best bang-for-your-buck bike out there. Has been for well more than a decade. I've had two: a 2000 modded as a streetfighter and a 2002 modded to be a track bike. Still wish I had the former (sold it to upgrade to the Falco, which I had for nearly three years ... and which would do 170. It was basically a Mille with a half-fairing and a more sane riding position):

Will the VIN start with a 3? BMW somehow gets away with putting the venerable W code ("W." Germany) on its South Africa-built cars. Anyone know what loophole allows them to do that?

They slapped the W on the South Carolina-built trucks/cars for a while, too. IIRC, they got into some kind of trouble for that and had to switch to a U.S. code (1,4,5).

Obviously, they seem to think that there is some (small) marketing cachet in the W.

I don't know if I care, but I am a big fan of the ED program and did it for my current car and might do it again. So, "Made in Deutschland" could be a factor for me. Of course, when the Mexico factory was announced, there were some jokey posts suggesting a South-of-the-border delivery program... for risk takers.

Haha that's funny regarding the "south boarder delivery program". I'm not sure on the "3" , just assuming based on past Mexico built VW's. I have mostly owned VW's, more than I can count on two hands.. I've had MK2's which were German, MK3 and MK4's which were Mexico builds, and moved into the MK5/6 which were built in Germany. Maybe I'm lucky, but the only car I really had issues with was the MK3 and it's old wiring (car was 10 years old). Aside from that, the German builds and the Mexican builds showed no variance in quality or fit/finish. The MK7 we have now is a Mexican build, and the quality of this car is absolutely better than the MK6 we traded in for it. The new chassis and platform have a lot to do with it too, but no funny finds or rattles in almost two years.

And, have you seen the VW plant in Mexico? It's gorgeous, state of the art, and the people there really seem to have a passion for what they do. There's 100's of video's on VW's youtube channel demonstrating the assembly of the new MQB. Now that I'm seeing BMW following these trends, one could only hope it'll keep vehicle purchase costs down. That would be the focus I'd have on moving from a German built car vice Mexican, to save costs as the end buyer. I think it's the only way VW could keep the Golf/GTI in a competitive price point. It's already a pricey car, when loaded up. The MK6 we had, had nearly the exact price all in which was around $41k CDN, and the MK7 is leagues ahead of the MK6 in almost all categories. I'd expect the same MK7, built in Germany would be closer to $45k had it been produced there.

I just completed the annual Consumer Reports automobile survey this morning. I had no problem areas to report, and rated most categories as Excellent or Very Good.

The only criticisms I had at all were about the complexity of the iDrive and audio system. For example, radio tuning could be so much easier with an old-fashioned tuning knob.

But to the topic of this thread, in 16 months and 6700 miles, I haven't had a single problem.

Well I have 2 cars and a motorcycle, and all of them are fun to drive. The BMW is stored during the winter, only driven during nice weather in the warm months, and then it's splitting time with the motorcycle. Plus my commute to work is less than 6 miles one way.

But yeah, I do agree - I may not be getting my money's worth out of the BMW.

talk to me after the warranty is up. the car should at a minimum reach 100k miles without a major component failure. that means no fueling pump issues, electric water pumps prematurely failing. The N55 is a pretty reliable engine, it's the accessories I worry about.

I've had my M235i for 2 1/2 years and I have had not one single problem.

I've had my oil changed, tires changed, wipers changed and that's it. I've driven my car from Florida to Montreal and back. From Florida to Georgia another time, and originally I brought it down when I bought it with PCD in South Carolina. 38,000 miles currently no issues. The most reliable car I have ever driven.

This may indicate that the car will rate as a good used car investment, which will effect resale/trade in value to our advantage.

No surprise here. I bought the 235 two and a half years ago. 35000 miles (and many track days) later as well as tons of hard driving in all conditions and not a single mechanical problem. Oil changes, tires and pads are all I have been through.

My e90 335 was the exact oppisite so went in this one expecting a shit show only to be pleasantly surprised.
