Lease return tire question, Conti Extreme vs PSS
I know I'm more then 18 months away from my lease return, but with a new job I will be driving a lot more then I have in the first half of the lease.
Car came with PSS tires, but on tirerack right now they have a really decent deal on Continental ExtremeContact DW. 300 dollars less then the PSS tires. The safe thing to do would be to mount the Conti tires now, and save the PSS, but then I'd be paying for mounting 2x. I'd rather burn out the PSS, then mount the Conti tires closer to turn in. Would these tires qualify? Or how can I go about verifying? |

Easy--call the dealer. I know they are fussy about turning in a car with non-RFTs if it was delivered with run-flats (found out the hard way).
This time around, I took the run-flats off my '13 128, and they are sitting in the basement waiting to go back on the car when I decide to trade it in. I did have the DW tire on my '09. Big improvement over the Pirelli run-flats. Liked them better than the Pole Position S-04s I put on my '13. |

They need to be the same type (run flat or not) that the car came with. Need to be same size, if yours came w summer rubber must return a staggered set. Finally must be same load and speed rating or better. There is no rule about brand.

Basically bottom line you need to turn the car in as you got it or better. Not talking better from a handling perspective, PSS are great. Just from a tire spec perspective.

IIRC, I once read an article that the treadwear rating translated into thousands of miles of wear under average use, tested on whatever method is used.
So, 340 treadwear would translate into 34,000 "average" miles. Of course, most people on this forum don't drive their cars in an "average" way. And, rear-drive Bimmers are harder on rear tires. And maybe my old, feeble mind doesn't remember the story quite right. At the least, you could use the treadwear rating as a comparison point. Higher means more expected treadwear. I did put the DW tires on my '09 1-series, and I liked them. Wish I had done the same on my '13. |

They test tires by putting them on a truck setup, with a few standard test tires. Then rating is then based on how much less the tires wear out compared to the test tire. |

Seems like best bet is to ask at the dealership you plan to turn it in to, since that will be the deciding point. Even if they 'should' be OK with another brand, you probably won't want to hassle with them over it, and you still have the option of setting the old tires aside to remount (not that big a cost to do an extra remount).

Also I don't think anyone mentioned if you're going to lease another car w them there is a little wiggle room. If you're just under they can let it slide - don't go in w completely bald rubber though.

And yes, there is a pretty decent explanation on Tire Rack's website, along with traction grades, and speed rating. Not bad to read when one is tired of reading about how the Steelers screwed up (they did).

Can you guys confirm that at lease turn-in, you don't need OEM and they won't require tires with the star marking? I must likely will need to change tires ahead of time but I wouldn't mind saving a few bucks by not putting a set of PSS...
