Gas mileage
Si I have had my new 228i for 2 weeks, driving mainly in comfort mode until I break it in. I'm getting 18mpg which is a little disappointing based on the numbers of 24-32mpg it was rated for. Is that because its new or does that mean driving in econo mode all the time which ain't gonna happen. I get better mileage in my X3!

How long are your trips? 3 or 5 mile runs to the store? I could see that causing poor numbers. 18 seems pretty low from what I have read. Some people have gotten near 40 with the 228.

yea, that seems really low. I'm averaging 23-24mpg in 90% city driving in the 235i manual. Also, my car is always in sport mode!

I agree, there is no mention of what type of driving. Lead foot or no lead foot. Just because you are in comfort mode doesn't mean you can't hit it. Are you getting 18 in the city or the highway? Need more info.

Try to relax the fuel economy will improve as you put more miles on it. Short trips and stop and go traffic doesn't help. If you get time try taking it out for an hour or so on an open highway. I bet you'd end up in the mid to upper 20's.

I get 16 mpg in the city in a tuned 228i. I got about 14 mpg in a tuned V8 Mustang ten years ago so I'm not blaming the BMW. I blame my heavy foot; I tend to upshift fairly high up the tach and drive in Sport or Sport + mode, often with sport gearing. It's not ideal but I suppose I just regard it as the price of doing business in a performance coupe.

I get 22 mpg. 80% city driving.
I am a bit crazy and switches from Sport mode to Comfort mode as soon as I am stopped and switch back when it gets moving. This is tiring but saves some gas when idling while taking advantage of the Sport mode. |

228i MT here, still just under 1200 miles, mpg so far is about 28 with a mix of urban and freeway driving in Germany, France, Austria, Italy and Switzerland. One nice feature of MT -- you can have both Sport mode and the tallest gear.

Didn't notice that idle RPM was higher in sport.

In the first 8500 miles I'm seeing 25-26 MPG. I have a semi-lead foot style. It's mostly suburban and freeway driving.Got 34MPG on a long road trip and 37 on a short one. Your mileage will improve as the car accumulates some miles.

I wouldn't worry about it yet as the car is still breaking in. Also, if you do a lot of stop and go driving or short distance driving on a cold motor (i.e. 10 mile or less trips), the mpgs will suffer greatly.
You can use this forum as a gauge for MPG, but keep in mind driving styles vary greatly, some have autos and other have manuals, some live busy cities, some have long highway commutes, some live in hilly areas, some live in windy areas, some live in cold areas, some live warm areas, some live at high altitude, some live at sea level, some have to run lower fuel economy bearing 91 ACN fuel, etc. etc. etc. What sort of driving do you do? Do you do a lot of stop and go driving? Where do you live? How many miles are on the car? |
