Nav maps
Hello,I don't understand the maps. I thought they were supposed to be up to date. I was going to the DMV to change my plates over. The address was not in the maps. It's been there at least 3 years. My garmin, even if a location is not in the maps it goes to the Internet. I thought the connected BMW would do that.

On the 2016 NAV system and going forward, map updates will be delivered via satellite. No info on how often that will happen, though. Even Garmin isn't always right up-to-the-minute, nor is Google. Takes time for new streets/roads to get into the various map systems, although after 3 years, it should show up. Best bet is to contact your dealer and ask about map updates and/or how to check which version you have versus the latest one.

Yes,my house is 3 years old and not in Garmin yet. However, some of the road changes show up right away. I guess it all depends on how well used the road is. My subdivision could take years

BMW doesn't create the map data, they buy it in. My house has been in the same place for nearly 200 years, yet TomTom, Garmin, Google, and my BMW think it is about 1/4 mile down the road from where it actually is. A road that has existed for well over 200 years.

I took possession of my 2016 in September of last year and have noticed three over the air updates for my maps. Can't say for certain if they were exactly three months apart, but I'm thinking it might be pushing out quarterly updates.

How were you able to detect those three updates? What should we look for to indicate an update has taken place?

In the upper right hand corner of the Nav screen you'll see a % progress indicator when its loading a new version and when it gets to 100%, you get an onscreen request if you want to activate the new version of Nav immediately or if you want to wait til the next time you start the car.

Thanks for the info. Nothing was marked. So,we get up to 4 updates a year. Can I change regions? Like when I'm in Chicago, update that region. Then when I'm in California, update that region? I should have caught that. I assumed it was like my Garmin.

The base map covers the whole country. The regionals give you more detail and newer streets. You can change regions, but the car dumps the one you have before it downloads the other one. Takes several hours of driving in a 4G area before the Northeast US one fully downloads on my car.

Ok,so at some point,if you travel in various regions, some are going to be out of date. Let me see if I have this right. I get the download for Illinois. I have all the new streets. Everything is good. I go to California. I change the region and it gets downloaded. Now all my Illinois changes are gone?

I would guess this is a real pain for people who live at the edge of two regions.

So are there periodic base map updates that are paid for? How are these applied? Thanks for the info!

Thread hijack: I'm driving in France, using the USB Euro maps BMW provided last week at delivery. The system is not saving my "last destinations", which is something of a pain. I'm wondering if that is a function of the temporary map substitution (USB source rather than hard drive) or a malfunction or a new "feature".

I called the 800 number and talked to a "genius". According to him,and he talked to someone else and verified it. Downloading a different region has no effect on the previous download. In other words,in my scenario my Illinois maps and my California maps would be up to date. Of course there are only four updates a year. So if in June I received an update of the Illinois region, then I went online and changed the region to California. I would not receive the California update for another three months. This actually makes more sense. Only time will tell what will actually happen.

USA - March 2015 Build with Tech Pkg.
Road Map - NA EVO 2015-2 Auto Map Update NC, SC, VA, WV, DC (2016-1) don't know what it was when I picked it up in July 2015. I do remember seeing a notice that an update was taking place but didn't pay attention because my understanding is we will receive over air updates for 3 years from purchase. |

I just went online and changed my region (from northeast US to mid-Atlantic). We'll see how long it takes to get the new update and what happens to the old one when the new one shows up. My last map download took place during the first week of March this year, so it's been about 3 months since then. Perhaps something interesting will take place soon.

BMW/Garmin is way behind Tom-tom and Apple maps with updated new roads in New Zealand at least 3-4 years.
