If have to say this car has had the least amount of new car smell out of all new cars I've owned.
It's funny how we crave the smell of all the toxic chemicals that are off gassing after manufacturing. New cars take me back to grade 1 when I'd sniff freshly printed copies from the ditto machine, mmmmmmmm. |

I know this is an old thread but...My 1 month old 2016 235i xDrive has no or very, very little new car smell left. When I picked it up it had 10 miles on it. I've owned quite a few new cars with leather and the new car smell staid quite a while. My 2015 X1 still had a little when I traded it in (Takata air bag recall). It still had the plastic covering on the paint until the day I got it. I know that's exterior but the car was not used before me. It's just weird to me. If anyone reads this old thread and has an explanation, I would like to hear.

I have thought a lot about the "new car smell" and honestly I am more than happy that there isn't one! (Still waiting on my car to arrive) and one of the main reasons is that new materials often off-gas and can be volatile. This could lead to future health issues if inhaled in our system for a long period of time. I would much prefer a air freshener to scent up the car than the new smell of glues and adhesives etc.
I remember when Steve Jobs passed away and people were linking the fact that California laws allowed "new car" purchases to go without a plate for the first 6 months and Jobs used that to his benefit and made a lease agreement with Mercedes to lease him a brand new unit every 6 months. In essence he is breathing volatile contents into his system for years non ending which may contribute to his passing. But that's just ones opinion and I find that true. Would you sleep in a bedroom that is freshly painted with extremely high volatile content in the air? I wouldn't!

Maybe some enterprising person will invent a wide range of various "scratch and sniff" odors for various car owners.

Neither of my new BMWs had much new car smell - but whatever they put in at the factory for windscreen wash smells AMAZING! Friend who was with me when I picked up my 328! at the Welt said "that smells like money" the first time I sprayed it!

A lot of times we get used to the smell so cant smell it anymore. But other people can when they get in. Like my old STi I just got in it yesterday and it smelled new and it has 20,000 miles on it. My 235 doesn't smell new to me anymore with only 1300 miles but anyone who gets in it loves it and comments on it. This time around I may do squash or something from bath and body works. They have a new one they smells like men's cologne

My 2015 M235i (now 15 months old, 18,000 km) still smells like new. BUT: this smell is nothing like my 2002 E46 330i's smell, still preesent when I was selling it away 3 years ago (she was a full 10 years old car then)! But I had leather in the E46, while my current 235 has the EU-exclusive "hexagon" cloth with alcantara upholstery; the smell is nice and durable but lacks that luxury ingredient...

Mine still has the new car (bmw) smell at 8 months and 18k miles of driving. I personally am not a fan of the smell. It kind of smells like fresh hyde reminding me of driving by livestock areas. Every loaner bmw ive driven has the same smell. I agree that the new car smell is half the experience of getting a new car. I looooovvee the smell of new lexus' tho. Thats what i think of when thinking of new car smells.

Is it just me or do these BMWs just not have the NEW CAR smell? It's the strangest thing to be in a new car and can barely notice that smell.

My car is nearly 3 years old and still has the new car smell in it, mind you I don't smoke/drink or eat in my car
