Manual 228i Sport Line here. I usually leave it in Comfort mode, and I do use the start-stop feature.
Just got 34 MPG on a trip from LA to San Diego, cruising at 75-80 MPH. Normal commuting, which is maybe 80% freeway, I get between 28 and 30, depending on traffic and how hard I push it. My average speed is usually around 38 MPH. In pure city driving, which is rare, I seem to get low 20s (20-23).

I haven't bothered to test whether the digital reading on the car is accurate, but it says I'm getting right at 25mpg for the life of the car. Roughly 6000 miles of SoCal driving so far.

Here is my Fuelly, and as you can see in the notes of each fill up, the car's computer is amazingly accurate.

On the highway with my 6 speed M235i about a week after I picked it up I drove about 350 miles up to Vermont from the NYC area and I averaged 73 mph and the computer indicated 31.9 mpg. Around town I think I average about 20 mpg.

228 6 speed
Driving across Ohio, I was able to approach (but not quite reach) 34 mpg on cruise set to around 72 mph Trip from Northern NJ to Lake Placid NY, I had got around 31 mpg. I am guessing because of the hilly terrain. Typical suburban driving, I am typically at 22-25 mpg, but have gotten as low as 19 mpg on a tank when the car was mainly used for short back and forth trips to the train station, grocery store, etc. |
