Turbo Upgrade

Hey Guys,

Wondering if there is any local turbo upgrade options for us Aussie lads?

Im aware of the Pure and Dinan options but was hoping there is a less expensive alternative here in Aust.

Cheers in advance.

A.

For F series N55, the only reliable ones known to date are Pure Stage 2. Yes they are expensive due to Shitty $AUD and Shipping cost but you get reliability. I know that for N54 there were RBs (they had smoking issues), VTT (extremely bad reviews) and Hexons (Out of business).
PS2 with FBO done properly will see around 330 -350rwkw.
Local manufactured ones are currently being developed (the same local tuners who fabricate the ones for XR6T, 2JZ and RB26). If they make one, our BMW would be guinea pigs test mules.
I honestly would love to see the Japanese hardcore tuners like HKS, MINES, develop one, because they perfeeeeect their work.

There are some local guys on here who sell the Ps2 (JD75). Or can buy directly from overseas as you said..I'm sure I've heard some will make it so you don't pay customs taxes..

I'm very tempted by PS2 but just concerned about the 8AT with big power/torque as I imagine it would be expensive to fix! Although 550hp (flywheel) with PS2 and fuel upgrades is appealing!

Purely from reading on the forums i think the tranny should be fine, it seems to always come down to fueling the boost. I havent read many articles about things blowing/breaking which is positive.

Group buy for st2 ? lets do et!

The ZF gearbox is German made and engineered and it is so good that alot of manufacturers use it instead of making their own.
It can handle a bucket load more power and torque. 225kw-240kw and 400NM -450NM in the stock 135,235,335,435 is nothing. The new M240i has 500Nm and 440i with MPpk gets 265kw and 500Nm out of it.
The new Alpina B4 which also uses the ZF box and the N55 engine (has two turbos instead of a Single twin scroll) gets 300kw and 600NM (more torque than the F80/82 M3/4) and dont forget that Alpina also underate their figures.
The Hellcat also utilises the ZF gearbox and that thing squeezes out 700Hp.
I dont think that PS2 tuned with 550hp is gonna break that gearbox or cause any slips. You will need to get LSD to utilise the power though.
Put it this way, my old e92 335i with the old 6speed gear box and alot of guys in the e90 forum run a lot of power with their N54 engine and that older gearbox didnt even break a sweat. The ZF 8speed is a generation better than it.

You do realise there are more than one variant of the 8HP ZF Box?

This

Having said that, I agree that I'm sure it is over-engineered and not going to implode if going above the quoted 450Nm max. But I guess given it would be an expensive repair, it does play at the back of ones mind when chasing big power!

Yes totally agree about different variations (Probabably more to do with gear ratios for the different type of cars and other calibration factors), but the ones fitted to our cars can definitely handle alot more juice than what is stated. There are many that have tuned and the ZF8Sp handles it. A simple PnP or flash tune with FBO (exhaust, intake, intercooler) can raise torque to 550-600NM, without any issues that Ive noticed. Turbo upgrades such as PS2 is good for 500-550whp, any more than that and the engine itself would be more prone to compromise. While the N55 is a great engine, its no where near to the same robustness as the Japanese straight 6 like the 2JZ and RB26.

If you are worried about the cars susceptibility to tuning, then I would say dont tune it. It is a fantastic car coming out of the factory and most people wont utilise all of it on a daily basis or spirited driving. Huge Power are only for bragging rights and if you're gonna race some random on a very very very long stretch of empty road with no police or cameras.

If you want Power, then go for ///M AMG or RS badges. They can handle it better.
