My neighbors love telling me how their ML and E500s will do this an do that all by themselves. The neighbors don't have to pay attn all the time. That's just wonderful. They make fun of my 335 and Z4 cause we drive them ourselves. I ask them why they just don't get a driver an sit their asses in the back seat????
I spend good money to get from point a to b. Sometimes it's so fun, I actually go through point f to get there .

Not interested. But for most, sounds like it'll be great. Should really make the first years 235i depreciate really quick???

I like how it's called "connected drive", for a tech that's basically disconnecting the driver from the wheel. It's like 1984 newspeak

Impressive tech nonetheless. I for sure would enjoy to be driven to work when the weather is bad or there are traffic jams (or just a boring road). All fine and dandy as long as it can be turned off. Which I fear may not last long, once this is mature. I see it becoming an enforced lawful mandate quickly for safety benefits (mixed feelings on that, it sure is disturbing, but it would also be effective at saving lives and dismemberments) .

You should also check the Audi TT doing hill climb at Pikes Peak at full blast, with nobody inside.

By 2050 I'll be in my early 70s, and presuming the old E28 is still alive (and it's driver) we will be having some fun with these self-driving cars...hell, just swerve into their lane, the computer will reel it in.

They might spill their coffee, but I'd be doing them a favour bringing some unpredictability into their lives: Hearts that beat fast, beat longer

I see the tech as an abomination not because of the current state of the technology but because it seems to be laying the ground work for what I see as the inevitable march towards mandated self driving cars. The main driving force behind the mandate will be safety.
I blame DCT. First the car does the clutch pedal for you, now it drifts for you.

Werner Huber says it best in that video from The Verge. If we're going to have self-driving cars (and like it or not, we are), they need to be able to bring a car back from the very limit of the control envelope, not just drive under perfectly safe conditions.

I'm of two minds when it comes to self-driving cars. On one hand, getting from A to B is something I must do, not something I always want to do. The drive from my home to the airport is a mind-numbingly boring 2 hour commute. I'd rather be doing something else. So in these situations, I'd welcome a self-driving car. However, driving a car is still something I enjoy tremendously when I want to drive. That's why I bought a BMW, right?

My hope is that in the future, if automated driving is mandated, it will only remain so in highly urban areas where cars pose a real problem. I wouldn't want to be forced to use the self-driving feature on a country back road. I'm optimistic that this is the future we're headed toward. Very few people enjoy driving in Washington D.C. traffic, but many people still enjoy a drive down a back road. I think that influence will temper politician's desires to turn cars in to nannymobiles.

This is perfect! I can finally take my BMW on a night on the town and avoid a DWI with all my Buddies. Drink up everyone and keep a blanket handy for the easy ride home. #Winning

I've always thought DCT or the shift pattern (P,R,N,D, -, +) next to the shift lever the sign of the apocalypse but I've never said it out loud for fear of starting another DCT vs. manual debate.

Re: his last statement in the Verge video - I would NOT pay extra for this.

Another aspect to this is, do you really care if you are in a $30K self driving car (SDC) or a $90K one if while you're in the vehicle you're focused everything else (iPad, phone or a movie) vs driving the thing? What will be the sales pitch for a high priced SDC?

All I got from that was how nice the M235i looks in that color. The black drawn out "map" over the silver paint looks awesome too.

So kewl...

Now, what is the point of this stupid crap? Does that Driver have to deal with a Clutch Delay Valve... or any of the other nannies in BMW cars?

Secondly, who wants to own, or drive a "highly automated" BMW.. everyone I know is pissed that their BMW's are too automated now. I want to drive the cars I buy, not have electronics drive my car.

Why is this being done in a M235i..?
Why are they not doing this on the i8, in all it's techno-glitz glory?

Less is more..

Next: an app from your government that will impose a certain speed, and sudden "updates" that will be send by the police or whatever, so you will be deviated from your route too...

I hate where we are going and it doesn't look good...
