Xdrive vs RWD
Hi all. I live in Toronto (GTA) and have always gone w RWD w winter tires w/o incident (inc. my current M235i). However, I'm about to lease a new M240i (same colour combo), and am seriously considering x-drive for a change. From what u've all said, the benefits of x-drive are: better winter handling / improved safety, better grip for acceleration, and arguably better grip when cornering (albeit some would argue RWD is better for cornering). I am not a track guy, and don't engage in hi-speed cornering, and am merely looking for improved straight line acceleration. In the past xdrive was too expensive, but now that it's only $1.5-2K more, on a lease that's a mere $1K delta. Am I crazy going for xdrive for a change? Will it perform in the summer months too?
As always I appreciate everyone's insights! |

Get ready for a war of RWD vs X-Drive. This should get ugly pretty quick. I chose x-drive because I live in a state known for snow one day and warm clear roads the next. I wont even bother with the rest as it will just turn into an argument from others. Good luck.

I think it comes down to just your preference. I chose xi since we can get lots of snow suddenly, but many are happy with rwd including my brother w/his 325.
Definitely the best handling awd I've driven. It's probably more important to ask if you want a manual or auto first since the awd limits you to auto. |

As I was saying, welcome to the RWD vs X-Drive argument thread.

If you're driving it 12 months per year and leasing, I'd say go for the xdrive. The extra grip can help in the colder months. Don't miss the ice storms one bit!

I chose x-drive because in Utah it is known to snow one day and have clear roads the next. Your point was you chose rwd for the same reason. That's basically the definition of or the beginning of what could be an argument. We will see plenty of posts proclaiming rwd is the only way to go, the best, true driving experience ect. Have a great day.

I just see where the thread is headed is all. We have several of them. the rwd fan boys will always proclaim to have the better drive-train and true driving experience and the xdrive fan boys will have the faster car. awd / automatic beats rwd / manual 20 out of 20 times. Last post from me on this thread. Have a good one.

i live in texas and drive xdrive. would have preferred RWD but got a deal on it that i couldnt pass up so i said fuck it.
to be honest, xdrive drives well but having so much traction all the time gets kind of boring. sometimes i hate the fact that i can floor it out of a sharp turn and the tires wont break loose. maybe the extra power of the 235 will make it easier to have a little fun. |

I pick RWD in Boston, Toronto might be different.....Even my wife drives RWD here, zero issues during snow. If I lived in mountains up north, I might've bought AWD
