To say that the BMW F20/F21 1 Series front end styling is polarizing would be an understatement. Initial reaction to the BMW 2 Series front styling, revealed last month in our spy photos, have generally been more favorable.

All of which begs the question - how would the F20/F21 look with all or some of the 2 Series' front end styling? And might the renders below preview what the F20/F21 LCI facelift may resemble?

I like both of them in some ways.

I think with the 2er headlights it looks more elegant, but it looses some of the funky-ness of the actual 1er hatch.

If I'm not very mistaken, there is a series of images of the 1-Series hatchback with heavily camouflaged front end and new-looking headlights. I hope they are somehow in line with what we saw in the 2-Series. As it seems, BMW will bring forward the LCI sooner than usual as I think they know they messed the front end of the car big time.

Facelifts or LCi s commence when the car approaches mid life - the 1er despite new competitors and despite individual opinions from "enthusiasts" the car is still a strong seller, thanks to its uniqueness in that segment to offer RWD and for a lot of 1er customers that is preferred.

There has never been a BMW that has been hurriedly facelifted because of individual opinion. For many that state the E65 was quickly facelifted only has to investigate that's its facelift occurred in 2005 at its mid-life.
The 1er will be facelifted in 2014. Its mid life before changeover to new UKL matrix in 2017.

How about BMW brings it to the US before MB does. They have one in development and it is coming to North America without question.

I was thinking about this as soon as I realized the 1-series and 2-series share fenders and hoods. This is going to be like the E90.2. I see this is a huge step forward for the 1-series hatch and can see BMW going in a similar direction for the facelift.

The small cut in the middle of the 2-series headlights exaggerates the length and slimness of the light in a great way.

I think ts61gogo's render(last one with the x6 front) looks best. I've only seen a few of these (F20) overhere in RO and boy do they look much better in person. But alas, opinions are like assholes, everyone has one

I think there are many people who have problem with the front end. The car of course drives great and as you say being the only RWD in its segment is on a different level compared to the A-Class and the A3. And of course it will sell well because it is really a great car.

However, its front end is ugly as hell and I believe this sentiment echoes the majority of BMW "enthusiasts", owners or not. I don't expect our opinion to significantly affect the board when a specific model is due for a facelift, however what exactly is this car on the pics? Is it an older M135 set of pics during development stages or is it really an LCI testing vehicle?

Having said that, I understand the need to differentiate between the 1-Series and the 2-Series but some strong 2-Series cues at the front end would do wonders for the appeal of the current model. The 2017 FWD is a different story though, I feel most people will opt for a 2-Series once the 1-Series becomes FWD.

I am really digging the 2 series styling. The headlights not meeting the grille is such a
better design than the 3 series. the M235 convertible and the M2 could be awesome !

I know people go crazy over these BMW hatches but as a designer of 15 years I cant understand how these hatchback body styles look good to anybody...they look badly ill proportioned and awkward at best...like a Frankenstein car

BMW, if you can hear me, please don't ever bring these stateside so I dont have to look at them in person...

Strong seller doesn't mean people like the way it looks
It's a great car, I'm sure, that's why it sells
But not for its looks
that front end is probably the ugliest front end to grace a BMW
If you disagree lets wait and see if any other BMW will have those butt ugly headlights
Or if they will die the miserable death they deserve

Keep in mind also that its a strong seller compared to what?
Lets wait and see how it sells after the A3 sedan and the CLA hit the market

It seems your attitude is more along the lines of "we didn't mess up, and we won't change it till its at its half life just to prove it"
It's ok to admit BMW has messed up the styling
