I can't say that I haven't done that

I actually have a fair amount of seat time in every single model that DCT (and SMG for that matter) has ever been offered in although I usually reserve my more spirited drives for cars that have come in on trade.

If you are on the fence, it behooves you to go drive a current M3/4/5/6. There is so much incorrectly stated about the DCT in this thread. Most of it seems to be based on past experiences with other or earlier variants, or seconhand info.

Tell your dealer you want to buy an M2, but first you want to put both trannys through the ringer on one of their other Ms.... if they wont let you, dont give them the sale.
Those "other Ms" are going to eventually go to unsuspecting customers who probably wouldn't appreciate knowing that their new pride and joy had previously been put "through the ringer".

Big no-no
Honestly - If you're buying it off the lot with miles and you expect any less... you're getting what you deserve. Or you expect it, want it now (and are leasing?)... so you don't really care.

We can't really blame dealers for limiting test drives (as we often hear around here) on one hand, while making diminished value arguments about test-driven vehicles on the other.

I've driven the F8x M3/4 with DCT 3 times, and 6MT twice.

In both cases, I'd still pick the 6MT every single day of the week. Not saying I don't understand why you like DCT so much. Yes, it's more efficient, faster, more consistent blah blah blah... but I just don't care.

Unless I'm driving on the track, DCT is boring to me. Again, I'm not saying that DCT is boring for everyone, just me. These newer M's are already somewhat "cold", especially when you compare to the old ones like the M Coupes, the E36s and the E30s. At least going with 6MT brings back some of that involvement (again, my opinion). And no, I don't prefer Walkmans to MP3 players, nor would I prefer to crank start my cars.

Everyone buys cars for a specific car for a different reason. My goal is to have the most fun from A to B, even if it's just a commute to work. My goal is NOT to get from A to B as efficiently and quickly as possible.

I will absolutely agree with you that you would be insane to not try both before purchasing.

^ Perfectly said.

You nailed my sentiments exactly. If I could have a fully dedicated track car, I'd probably go the DCT route otherwise it will always be a 6MT for me.

In my opinion, if you even have to ask yourself whether you want dct or manual, just get the dct. If you're a manual guy, there won't be any question which one to get.

Got in the M235 6mt w/lsd. WOW I was so impressed, but the power didn't catch me off guard as the M4.

I just got back from test driving a new M4 w/DCT and was able to adjust transmission shifting modes, with the help of my CA, to shift quite smoothly. I will strongly consider getting the DCT on an M2, if it will be offered.

Came back to manual after absent 10 years of driving auto.
I missed driving manual WRX and S2000 in old days.
faster .5 seconds DCT over MT means nothing to me, I do not race or autocross.
I guess whatever floats your boat it will be.
I would have probably gotten DCT if I were to get a M4 but My M235i is a small and sporty car just like older generation BMWs. I like My M235i this way

Ha! I'd flip-flop: 6mt for track (to hone skills under pressure) and DCT for daily (ho- hum) driving.

Drove stick for 10 years and took the gamble on DCT when I got my 335is and won't go back to stick if the DCT is an option (which it looks like it will be). I love the speed of the DCT and the rev-match on the downshifts.

With the 335is, you can place the car in sport mode and this remaps the gear ratios which really open up the car. I drive the car only in "manual" mode and you can really recognize the difference. Autocrossing and track days are move of a blast and for me, I love using it during those events.

Drove the F80/F82 at BMW Performance School and, in those rides, the DCT was even more amazing. For me, it matched the motor and my driving style perfectly. Did not like the BMW manuals when I was initially shopping.

I would drive both transmissions and see what you like. It is a hard decision, but you've gotten a wide array of inputs and great advice. DCT also helps in that if your significant other or friends can't drive stick, they can still get around. My wife can drive stick but doesn't feel comfortable in DC traffic and, if she needs to use the car or I have one too many, she can always play wheelman.

You can't go wrong. Try both and decide!

A few of us think that if you have a manual, you will get fewer friends begging to drive your car.
