Going back and forth the best they can do is $1,000 off MSRP... Is this a fair deal?

You know there is a whole thread dedicated to pricing with 80 pages of posts of people detailing what deals they got.

Previous poster put the invoice at $46,195 + port installed options $2,405 totaling $48,600. Let's just say add $1,000 or max $1,500 above that should be no more than $50,100.

That should be the number I'm aiming for right? Sorry for all the questions but I have not bought a new car for over 7 years.

Dealership isn't going to give you $6-7k off. You'll be lucky to get $2-$3k off. Most of the big discounts are from ED and vehicles that have been sitting on the lot. You have to understand they custom ordered this vehicle for you and that adds a small premium to the price.

My fault I wasn't including tax. I see what you mean by adding a premium for a custom vehicle.

Buyer commits to a sale requiring the dealer to basically put in an order and not have to worry about paying for man hours for someone to sell it, someone to keep it washed and cleaned after test drives, no loss from it taking inventory space. Basically a sold vehicle with 0 overhead. Pay extra for the privilege of saving them money?

To the previous poster saying that people are getting $500 over invoice on the M3, note there are many more M3s in southern California dealer lots than there are M235i's. $500 over invoice on an M235i is not "competitive"... it's a steal. I would pay no more than $1500 over invoice with no other markups above standard.
This is on target. You are not in the best position since you already ordered, but if you are prepared to walk away, that's the kind of deal you can get, even on an ordered car.

port installed accessories have even lower invoice price than standard options

you should aim for 6.5-7% off MSRP

$1,000 off MSRP is not a great deal or even a good deal, but in my opinion, it's not particularly unfair under the circumstances.

I checked cars.com, and there are currently a grand total of a dozen m235i coupes on dealer lots in Southern California. 12 cars, that's it. It's not like these cars are languishing on dealer lots. Dealer here ordered a car to customer's exact specifications, so we have to assume it's the precise configuration that buyer wants. What are the chances that any of the other 12 cars on dealer lots in SoCal match buyer's exact wishes? Zero.

So, we're left with a situation where dealer has exact car that buyer wants. It's not unreasonable for dealer not to be willing to do a huge discount, especially in the absence of any prior agreement. I know that this advice is unhelpful at this stage of the game, but for goodness sake, next time cut the deal at the time you order the car.

Note the geography, which is why I specifically stated Southern California. The northeast and Ohio are not quite the same markets as socal, which has one of the highest concentrations of BMW dealers and owners in the US. Despite our higher concentration, we don't seem to be getting enough cars to saturate the market beyond demand. Much better now than it was last year, but upon my most recent inquiries, $500 is a steal - few dealers will give you that. I've always been comfortable around the $1200 over invoice mark as the difference to me is negligible between $500 and $1200.

I agree. I think $1,000 off MSRP is not good as well.

I'm currently exchanging emails now with the dealer and I requested 49,500 (not including tax). That should be near 1k above invoice give or take..

I'll definitely take this as a learning for future orders.

Thanks

I would tell dealer that I am canceling order since another dealer is willing to do it for say $1000 over invoice

Max 1k over invoice. Socal there's lkke 10 dealers within an hours drive.

Even 1k over is too high, IMO.

And there's no "special premium" for ordering it built. Maybe they get end of year incentives for what they have on the lot, but don't let yourself rationalize for them.

You can have an order built from anywhere including the east coast. A sale for your dealer is a sale.

Btw it is possible that your CA's hands are tied, but I doubt it for an M235.

Mine wouldn't give me more than 1,000 off msrp for an F80, but was willing to do 500 above invoice for an F30 (several thousand below msrp. Just what the owner was willing to allow the sales manager with their allotments.

$1000 off MSRP is not good enough. They're trying to hold it over your head that it's here and you can take it now. I recommend waiting and custom ordering from somewhere else after you have negotiated in advance. With TAXES INCLUDED, you should be around the $52-53k mark for a decent to good deal. I got below invoice on my car, but I have a 228i xdrive, not an m235i. I also live on the east coast where deals on these cars are apparently more common. If the dealer refuses to budge from 1k under MSRP, walk and order from somewhere else. I understand it's a business and they need to make money, but we all know that the dealers make money from other things besides the final sale price (manufacturer kickbacks, warranty repair work, etc…). NOT A GOOD ENOUGH DEAL. STAY VIGILANT AND KEEP US UPDATED
