New owner - resident physician
Currently 32. When I went into medicine at 22, I thought I would have no issue buying a brand new M3/M4 when I got out of school. The reality was harsh. Tons of school loans (easily could buy 2-3 M3s). Just stuck with my prius for a long time (which was a solid car) during my residency (shitty salary and looong hours).
As I am in my last years of training and know my salary will bump (from a shitty trainee salary), I finally pulled the trigger to buy a used M235i. I got lucky, 2016 with 3.8 k miles. Premium, technology, and HK package. The previous owner was nice enough to keep the black kidney grills, painted diffuser, and a clear bra! Super happy with the car. Its literally three times faster than my prius. |

Congrats!
Medicine sure as hell ain't what it used to be, hopefully you're not in a specialty with insane med mal premiums. Dad was paying north of $1M per year last year he did OB. Only way to really make $ these days is to own hospitals, large physician groups with major bargaining power against ins companies, derm with attached med spa etc. You're not going to afford an M5 anytime soon grinding it out seeing patients in the office, 40-50 per day. |

I paid 37k pretax (included shipping from oregon to california).
I agree, medicine is not the way to go if you want to buy an M5. I mean.. you can, but by then you have more important things to buy like house, your wife/husband . I am in radiology. We had a time where we were getting close to a million, but now it has gone down to 300-400 range, 600 if your lucky in California. And yes we used to be able to own our own practice, but now we have to join forces with major group for protection, benefits, and stable income. Its still a large amount in comparison to the rest of the country, but I do have tons of student loans :/. Whats another small auto loan on top of that. Not a big deal haha |

Congrats on seeing the light at the end of the first tunnel into the even bigger and longer tunnel. Enjoy your M235i. As others have mentioned, it will be a while before you can start buying the toys. I thought the same thing going into chiropractic school, but then the reality of setting up a practice, buying a house, paying student loans (nothing compared to today), having kids, saving for retirement, buying a newer bigger house, putting kids through college, paying for a wedding, etc., etc. all set in. Now at age 55, I have my new BMW and I love and appreciate it. Makes the drive home from work each day very satisfying.

Everyone I know who made real FU money got in quite a while ago and owns surgery centers, physician groups, one guy invented Lasik (granted that's a unique thing to do). Best of luck with the car! |

OH- DUDE. You must do this. I'd go to medical school just so I could. Assume it's not an xDrive being in LA. Call Luftkraft Fab in Denver. Have them make you a bespoke xDrive badge that looks virtually identical but says xRay instead. No one will ever notice, super stealth, and it would be slick as fuck.

Congrats. Nice car . Am I the only one thinking "door dings" as I look at those pics of the cars parked so closely?

Congrats, OP!
Just turned the dial at 30 last year, and it was kind of the same thing for me. Took a dive, said to myself "it's time", before the wedding/kids starting becoming the topics of discussion, lol. It's kind of a selfish way of preparing myself for the future I suppose, but I grew up with very little, and always told myself "I won't be that dad who had to sell his baby (car), to make room for a minivan". Now that I'm able to, I took full advantage of getting out of a VW, and into an ideal BMW coupe, with tons of capability. I'll have two baby seats in the back of this thing, no sweat! Have fun with it, it's a really good car for what you paid, and you'd be hard pressed to find much else out there with the value/performance of the M235i. Cheers, D

Congratulations and welcome to the BMW family. Just to let you know I've been done with residency for a long while, 22 years, and just bought my M235i last year as a dealer demo car. It's a great car. Enjoy it.

Do enjoy the new ride. I wasn't able to pull the trigger until I turned 56, so you are ahead of the game.
I know a lot of doctors in my small town. I rely on a few for certain things, and I marvel at how they are still practicing. Don't know how they do it, but I'm glad they still do. Though, I suspect that this era is quickly drawing to a close. I was a career high-school teacher. IMO, so many people in the medical profession have a tougher road than I did. So, cheers! |
