What's the storage compartment in front of cup holders for?

You know that small flip up compartment in front of the cup holders? What do you guys store in here? It seems too small to keep anything, just curious if anyone has found a good use for that space.

Extra Starbucks stoppers in case you forgot to get one in the store.

For I believe $10 or thereabouts you can replace the flip up insert with a plastic tray. It's much more useful and you can actually then keep things like sunglasses there.

In my case, it's just a dust collector. I don't eat or drink in my car.

A pass for a parking garage fits there.

Hard to imagine using it as one, but I believe that is your ashtray. The nonstick coating does allow for a whole new level of sliding, jouncing noise from whatever you put there - a dime or a paperclip will sound like a fistful of nails. Someday I'll get the rubber insert and make it useful....And gotta confess that I was pleased to find a car old-school enough to have a real cigarette lighter/ashtray, even if I don't smoke (and a knob for the radio volume).

I keep about $8 in quarters in a ZipLoc sandwich bag there.

I was thinking of putting coins but I'd imagine they would be quite loud in that compartment when driving.

And when the ashtrays are full, it's time to sell the car.

Not in a plastic bag. Works great!

Unused RX bottles are also the perfect size for quarters, something I picked up from dad the doctor over the years. I actually had buddy (also doctor) notice in my car one day and a few weeks later he had one for me with a label that said "take as needed for parking."

Great tip! I'll definitely be doing this for my parking quarters.

I just wouldn't use one that had a label for opiates or any hard core class 1 RX on it. I think the one in my car currently was for penicillin or something equally innocuous. Probably wouldn't be an issue but on the very off chance someone saw it in the car after an accident or something no sense in inviting questions for no reason.

Guess what else is? Those tubes that M&M Minis come in. One tube holds about $22.

Admit it, this is the silliest, most useless compartment anyone has ever seen in a BMW. I keep trying to find a use for it. Coins maybe, but they roll around if not in a bag and anyway, parking meters these days rarely take coins.
Condoms? For that special moment? Unlikely in this little car unless both participants are yogis.
