No issue, 2nd muffler pipe is controlled by valve. Loud because it's in warm up cycle, 2nd exhaust pipe is closed

No but it really is a waste of time when people post crap. You either open it thinking it's something that may be interesting and it's garbage, or it's a lot of crap that makes it harder to find good stuff.

Lack of consideration and possibly education is astounding from a few of the posters here 3.0L...just learn to ignore them...

At some point the moderator will wake up and hopefully shut them out...

Oh boy. Here we go. Dude - no offense - but there is a veritable treasure trove of information already on this site that many others have spent a long time compiling, educating themselves, and sharing with others. If Mike or others (myself included) try to reinforce the message that folks should try and do some of their own homework once and a while, maybe in a nastier tone than needed, that's not the point.

When someone with 2 posts starts a thread in the general forum asking about a coding topic, for example, that has been discussed to death in another DEDICATED subforum, the inclination is not to help the wayward soul. Take 5 minutes out of your busy day, try to find the answer yourself, and if you can't then ask. People are much more inclined to help those who first try to help themselves.

First, look at my number of posts and number of "Rep" points.

Second, look at yours.

Third, know that I've been a forum moderator before, for both a motorcycle-related and a bass guitar-related forum. I've been active on forums since 1995. (Yes, you read that right). I've never been banned from one. Um, I don't think that's gonna start now ...

Fourth, know that Motorsport_235i has a history of banal knee-jerk question asking on 2Addicts. My response to him above is a reaction to that. He simply doesn't care.

Fifth, if you really must know: I have two B.A. degrees, both magna cum laude, and was a year short of earning a Master's before a career opportunity pulled me away from school.

Finally: I've not assumed anything about you. Assuming gets you in trouble. Remember that as a life lesson. K? K!

- Your friendly and (sometimes) cantankerous forum deputy

Seriously?

And yet this thread about the "ashtray" is 46 posts / 3 pages long?

http://www.2addicts.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1406129

I can fully appreciate the frustration from forum members who've been here a long time, but we were all "noob's" once, and for some here, this may be their first foray into the world of forums and online engagement. How much time does it take out of our busy day to recognize a thread that isn't interesting or is redundant on asks a question that the OP could have searched on and found an answer in less than 5 minutes? I for one appreciate new voices and new questions, even if they cover previously plowed ground. Every once in a while a new perspective is revealed when a topic comes up again for the 2nd, 3rd..9th or 10th time.

Okay, "forum police" feel free to expound on the errors or my viewpoint. I've said my piece and won't be responding to counterpoints.

It's one thing if those new questions are in the proper place, i.e. subforum. It's a totally different prospect if those questions are spread among two, three, four, or more subforums. That situation makes those who properly use a forum to search for information or learn about the subject at hand have to work exponentially harder to find that info, and that does no one -- noobs or vets -- any good.

I've said in other threads recently that more and more people use forums like a chat room or a Facebook feed. There are a number of factors for that, but those platforms and mobile media, in addition to Google searches and Quora, Ask.com, and other crowd-sourced info clearinghouses, are partially responsible for the tendency.

However, 2Addicts is not structured to work that way at all. It is a topical database first. A fundamental difference between the structure of 2Addicts and other model-specific Bimmerpost forums and a catch-all model forum such as Bimmerfest is the topical subforum model. Subforums are meant almost solely to make searching for, and discussing, specific topics easier. Those who don't understand that distinction are only making 2Addicts that much harder to use as intended.

we were all newbies at one time, and we read all the posts prior to asking a question to make sure it wasn't asked before. That is the difference.

Especially questions that are answered by reading the owners manual.

At least make it look like you tried. If you do nothing other than post in the appropriate sub forum, make some passing reference to "I tried to search" and maybe even include a thread that was vaguely on topic but not quite right, people will be much more likely to help.

Either that or just come clean. I was once briefly looking at a TTS and had to make a decision very quickly. Posted a question on an Audi forum where folks are not as nice as here and said literally hey guys, I'm sorry this has been covered I'm sure but I need to figure this out quickly and don't have time to research...

I got a ton of helpful responses within 20 minutes and no one got on my ass about being dumb or lazy.

Not sure if trolling, but there is literally a subforum with "exhaust" in the title.

Check this one out though. http://bfy.tw/D3aG

This is also a well known design feature. Even lacking any ability to search and find an answer, call the service department and ask them. 30 seconds poof you have an answer.

Please read this. And your manual if you haven't already. Most of your other questions are answered in the manual.

So you're saying as long as OP had caveat-ed his question our resident deputy with his 22 years experience foruming wouldn't have chewed his ass out? If I've learn't anything from here is that if you poke the bear prepare your anus for a chewing from Mr Perfect.

I used to be annoyed by viffermike, cause he comes across as rude but it's actually hilarious.

I will say this though. 2addicts isn't exactly a hive of activity so the odd junk post doesn't fuss me. Besides forums are the perfect breeding ground for flame wars and arguments over the smallest things.
