Totaled or Not??

Got into an accident where a bus merged into my lane on the highway while he was at a complete stop in another lane.

Do you guys think this is a total loss?

"Total" is an economic decision, not a matter of how much is crunched. Same damage on different model years yields different decisions. Important part is you are OK. Insurance company will compare repair cost vs car value and that's the basis of knowing the answer. Exception: some companies will total a car even if economically feasible to repair if floor pan is distorted. As our cars are unibody and not body-on-frame, there is no frame to inspect, so condition of floor pan may be key but your hit looks higher up. Good luck!

Rule of thumb is airbags deployed=totaled.

As Scotty said "It's worse than that, it's dead, Jim"

What are you going to replace it with?

The insurance will likely want a body shop to start disassembling it and inventory the parts and labor needed. When that list is made the appraiser will go over that list and report to the insurance. The insurance then will weigh the cost of repair vs replacement.

It's a time consuming process unfortunately. Good luck, glad you are ok.

BTW... Just looking at the damage all the way to the "A" piller... And looking at the gap between the passenger door and frame in that interior picture... I'm leaning toward totaled.

It is absolutely a total loss vehicle, no way that one is getting put back together.

Looks similar to what happened to my relatively new Subaru Forester back in 2013, so I'm definitely leaning towards totaled.
BTW, if they do "fix" it, its value will have been diminished by 25- 35% compared to an identical non-accident 2-series.

Another BTW - it is in your interest to have it considered totaled, so don't minimize the total cost of repairs and related expenses that the insurance company are going to incur - and that means that you should take advantage of all benefits including getting a free rental during the repair period (which by the look of damage and time to repair, could be a month or 2 or 3).

The 2 Series does not have a frame. Unitized construction.

If the repair costs exceeds the threshold value established by the insurance company, they won't support repair. From a purely technical standpoint, it is feasible.

I see your knee, curtain and steering wheel airbag deployed. Can you describe the impact and your injuries? A buddy of mine got injured by his airbag, messed him up.

Glad your ok.

The OP asked if it was a "total loss" and my post was spot on, it is a total loss. No insurance company is paying to put that back together based on the vehicles current value.

Can someone take it and put it back together? Sure anything is possible. Thanks for helping me out.

And I concur.

Sure, the Russian dude pounded, twisted, welded, stretched, sanded, ground, filled and pranged that 2 series back to what looked like a car, but its still a damaged and "repaired" car. Who wants it?

You can't erase history. A no damage history vehicle is the best. And the most valuable.

Agreed.

Man, that dude was seriously hammering out that weld support for a good hour, those were some horrible bends he was trying to straighten out.

That is one scary car to ever get behind the wheel of again with all that had to be done.

I was on the right lane on the highway and a city bus was stoped in the other lane because the exit they wanted was blocked off as I was about to pass then they decided that was a good time to go into the lane i was in.

The impact was going to hit the driver side so I tried my best to get the impact on the passenger side..i think that's the only reason I'm not seriously hurt.

My hands hurt and my leg and ankles are starting to hurt a little

Please go and get checked and scanned. I was in an accident recently as well, and the airbag messed up my hands a little bit. It seemed like my hands were just sprained but after getting checked I was suspected to have a fractured scaphoid bone. One CT scan a week later, the fracture was ruled out but it was badly sprained and I still need to keep my hand in a splint.

You may be right, the insurance company will let him know.

But, I'm not being snarky....you started out saying there was "no way that one is getting put back together", and we now agree there is at least "one way", even if not very desireable. I also think we can agree modern body shops have far better techniques and outcomes than in that video. The only remaining factor is economic. Perhaps you were suggesting, as you now clarified, there was "no way" an insurance company would pay for that, but, taking it as originally written, it came across as a far more general statement about the ability to put a damaged car back together. So, maybe just a misunderstanding of the written word...not a big deal...sorry about the detour.
