Looks like it will support AirPlay mirroring for us Apple folks. That said, if the unit can run Waze and Apple Music natively, it's a more appealing option for me than the BMW nav and BT streaming.

The limited info so far seems to indicate it's a replacement for the 6.5in screens -- wonder if it will work with tech package cars?

I'm looking forward to this for my non-nav M235. Plus it's a BH company which I have stock.

Looking forward to a review and some more info on this. If done right I think this concept would work really well. I don't have the tech package and do run Wave and Spotify on my phone. Would be nice to have that fully integrated into the screen rather than just the audio coming through for navigation.

this is not new. Maybe this brand is launching it, but this has been done for years now.

They are on ebay/amazon/aliexpress.

Some say the gps dosent work that well, but other than that, it plugs into the oem harness so you have full i-drive functions without any hiccups plus you can run any android app or game.

I'm curious as to whether or not this unit has WiFi connectivity, as I'm not a smartphone addict/owner. My 2013 335i doesn't have the Tech package. If it has sufficient intetnal storage, I could install the Sygic navigation app and download all the maps to be stored locally, rather than depending on cell-phone connectivity and the associated data costs. Other than the touch-screen, which I'm not a fan of in cars because it's too distracting, the increased screen size would be welcome, as would certain Android apps that don't depend on connectivity. But $1K is way too steep - when it gets down to the cost of a good Samsung tablet of comparable size (<$200), I'd probably buy and install one.

My 240i has Nav and the 10.1 screen, however I would consider this purely for the Android compatibility. It disappoints me that from the factory BMW treats Android users like an afterthought.

They are obviously appealing to the Apple "herd" mentality.

I've tried to like Apple, but have had too many "WTF" moments when trying to intuit their operation and limitations. I also have issues w/ the Kindle based products.

I have nothing against those that are on the Apple or Kindle bandwagons. The more options available to us, the better.

I used to be in the Android eco system but after switching to the latest apple offering I'm much happier, different strokes I suppose. The over arching thing for me is that apple is serious about protecting users privacy. Makes sense, they make cash from products not users.

This has been discussed elsewhere but there's a supply agreement dynamic at play and Apple is more to "blame" than BMW. I say blame in "" since Apple is perfectly logical in throwing its weight around as it does.

That said things are slowly starting to change as evidenced by Amazon TV now being available as an app on Apple TV.

I'm pretty sure BMW is paid by Apple to exclusively promote carplay since Apple spends literally billions on controlling the market.

It's annoying but money is money, and knowing phone demographics, the average 328i driver is probably a lot more likely to have an iPhone to go with their Coach purse and rest of their "I want to talk to the manager" starter pack

Yes I have read about the Apple / BMW agreement. I have also seen an quote from a BMW exec stating they do not embrace Android because they do not think it adds to the Premium experience they are trying to deliver (I believe it was in Roundel).

Part of the appeal of Apple is that the shit just works easily even for tech-tards, which has benefit to BMW (and other brands) as well. The performance isn't always top top end and the price is usually a premium, but it's all clean and pretty and plays nicely together. The whole eco system thing is not entirely bullshit from a value prop perspective.

If it doesn't void warranty I'm definitely interested.

Question is how is the fit and finish? Hopefully someone at bimmerfest will get pictures and info.

For me that ship has sailed a long time ago. Advertisers already know all about my porn fetishes from my years of google search records. I now have nothing to lose by sticking with greater flexibility/freedom offered by Android.
