3 miles per gallon is unbelievable. By that I mean I literally don't believe it.
For what it's worth, I did go ahead and google it and couldn't find any remotely credible scientific data that shows a 3 mpg loss. I'm willing to accept there is some loss but I'm thinking more along the lines of .03 mpg. Most of the data available was merely people suggesting significant loss but without anything substantial to back it up. Maybe I didn't google deep enough but I didn't see anything worth repeating. |

Having front bumper holes repaired and cover repainted will cost between $500-$600. Drilling holes to mount a license bracket causes damage to your car. I couldn't care less about my license plate bracket being off center. It's better than rolling around with two holes drilled through it.

I was wondering the same thing - is that a real estimate, or fantasy. Its a good argument that I'll happily use if I'm ever pulled over.
But I'm kind of a data geek, so I do wonder...Big unknown right now is what adding the plate does to the car's cd. I found this: " In fact, reducing the Cd of a car by just 0.01 can result in a 0.2 miles per gallon (.09 kilometers per liter) increase in fuel economy " here http://auto.howstuffworks.com/fuel-e...odynamics2.htm And if anybody wants to try some Fortran (makes me feel like I'm back in High School, with IBM cards...) there is this: http://www.users.csbsju.edu/~jcrumle...cy_writeup.pdf This makes me skeptical - per this, a 3mpg would be a Cd change of 0.15 (unless these need to be squared or something), and that seems like a huge change in Cd for just a plate (unless it is that roof-rack mounting option). But we are in the Trump Era, and so I'm gonna tell 'em it costs 3mpg and skip all that messy math stuff. Last edited by Maynard; 05-24-2017 at 07:31 AM.. Reason: math |

I keep mine in the trunk. This way, if I get pulled over, I can prove that the second plate isn't being used on some other car, and it makes the argument stronger in trying to negotiate a ticket down to a warning.

I'm torn on this subject right now. I'm picking up my m240i hopefully Friday and have asked the dealer to not drill into the bumper. I like the idea of the tow hook mount, but I'm not 100% sure I like the aesthetics of it being mount off to the sides. I don't have parking sensors so maybe I can get away with more mounting positions that will be pleasing to the eye? If mounting using 3M tape, do you mount just the plate or 1st mount the plate to the holder and then tape to the bumper? This is going to be my daily driver and it has to get through nasty Canadian winters.

You know, that's a good idea. If pulled over, I could also present the fact that I could not locate any front mounting bracket.

Meanwhile, I know where "they" can display the plate. Heh!

I know everyone has there own opinion. I live in a state where the front plate has to be displayed on the car. Shocker, I display it. Many years ago,I had a BMW. I had to argue with the dealer to install the front place. Not any more. They just do it now. I'm surprised a dealer in a required state doesn't just do it.

Some places you can get away with propping the plate on your dashboard, to avoid meter-maid tickets (crazy to leave it there while driving, and wrap the edges or it will kill your dash). Other places they will still ticket you though.
Part of me kind of wishes they had just bolted mine on w/o asking, so I could hate them and be done w/ it - even though my rational self says it is a no brainer to put the damn plate on, I can't bring myself to drill it, and muck up a great looking front end (even if it isn't that bad of a look). I really pity the Audi guys - on their front end it sticks out like a sore thumb, at least with ours there is some symmetry for a central plate (and they have to drive an Audi). And if you are going to tape a plate in place, PLEASE use one of those simple backing frame sets. Nothing looks more ghetto-cheap than a naked plate stuck to a bumper, and it won't go a full winter before it is corroding from the edges. Personally I'd use the factory mount, as it isn't that bulky and could probably be adapted to the tape if you want to go that route. Last edited by Maynard; 05-24-2017 at 07:38 AM..
