Maps won't update

My quarterly map updates are not happening. I brought it in and the SA didn't know what I was talking about. "There are no free map updates " I had to explain it to them. I had a few other issues and I ended up with new maps. 16-2. However,it still is not happening. No region updates. Is anyone else having this issue? I shouldn't have to bring the car in to get these updates. I called the geniuses and they just said bring it in.

No great insights to add, just to say no OTA region updates either.

It's something we paid for. I received 1update shortly after I got the car. Nothing since. It's over a year now.

For what it's worth, I've been getting the quarterly updates over the air on my 2016, so it certainly is possible. Can't say for certain if it's exactly on the first day of every third month, but is has always self initiated while I'm driving along. As B_Rice said there might not always be an update, but I imagine BMW going a whole year without for anywhere in North America. Are you in an area with fairly good cell reception for it to download the update file?

I live in the Chicago area. I got an update a month after I got the car. That's over a year ago.

I have 2017-1 regional, 2016 base maps installed, according to the display. Shouldn't we be on 2017-2? Also, by the way, what has to be done to have up-to-date maps for travel outside one's region?

I have 2016-2 base maps and no regional maps. When I had the car in last time they installed new base maps. Does anyone have 17-2 regional maps? What region?

Keep in mind that this will happen on your next scheduled update.(if it works). So you have to plan ahead.

Interesting discussion folks, but frankly I don't know why all that fuss about OTA updates. Even when they do work, it's a time-consuming and error-prone process and will never update your entire map; it can be distracting when driving too. That's why I solely rely on downloading the whole thing quickly and comfortably to my home PC (with BMW's downloader app with CRC check, etc.), then transferring the whole new version from a stick to iDrive. Isn't it simply better?

It's an download manager that you get from BMW server prior to actual map download; using it you can access the latest map update for your car (an account must be set up before that, so the server knows your car navigation system and your active Connected Services - of course you need to be entitled for the map update). The download of 20+ GB zip file can be paused and resumed, plus before unpacking and transferring to the stick, it's checksum will be checked - this ensures you will never load a corrupt map file into your car's navigation system.

Based on the instructions posted,I don't see how that is easier then basically doing nothing. The roads here are changing all the time. I could use a regional update.

moldcad that explains it. We don't have the ability to attach our VIN to a Connected online account at this point. The story from BMW is that since Canada was one of the first markets with ConnectedDrive, our systems are legacy and won't work with the current generation of apps. Upgrades are planned and should be live next year.

No luck for me ...

Guess what? Just last week I received a regional update 2016-4. The next day I received another one. 2017-1. Finally.

I finally received an update. It was totally transparent. It just told me it had to restart the maps. No other messages.
