Think so....it would look like someone tossed in the wrong mats, as the oyster color would not tie to anything else in the car. If you can't see yourself with the red/black interior (which looked great in the above photos!), the next best is a lighter color in the light gray or tan families. Black is dull, old, visually makes the interior small, and with any given amount of tint, always hotter than anything else!

I'll be going for the black interior with the melborne red, but it's an easy choice when you know you're not buying leather. I do think it looks the best for the red though.

Not sure I understand what you mean by "it's an easy choice when you know you're not buying leather". In the U.S. leather or fake leather is the only choice.

If you get Sensatech then black is the only option. I'm pretty sure that's what he means.....

Yes, I wasn't aware fake leather can be considered leather.

Is coral red an exact match to melbourne red? If not, how do they differ?

No. Coral red is a darker, slightly muted red color. 99% of photos get it wrong. If you've ever seen how Terra looks like Saddle in pictures because it is so light, Coral is kind of the same. Nowhere near as saturated as cameras make it to be.

I think it would look good if and only if they matched. But keep in mind you are dealing with a natural product in leather. Not all dye the same, fade the same, etc. I had a slip cover made for my Eames lounger because my dog loves to jump on the ottoman post-walk, and the guy told me I could never just recover the ottoman and not the whole thing because you can never get leather to match. Even if the paint and leather matched 100% day one, both fade over time at different rates so they wouldn't stay perfect.

Assuming the offered it, which they don't, if you were dead set on red/red this is one case I would lobby for sensatec.

However, keep in mind that with colors as close as this, the BMW design office would create masters for the exterior paint and interior leather and strive to harmonize them. I can relay to all from my experience at another auto maker, that in color and trim reviews, all possible interior/exterior combinations are displayed in a room with artificial daylight to ensure that no unacceptable tone adjacencies are created. In those cases, certain combinations are rendered unavailable. BMW seems to be more lenient on combinations (Superman!?!?), but for red-on-red, they would most certainly do their best for a coordinated outcome.

The point about lighting and photography is true, however. It does need to be seen in person, in daylight, but if one looks at the door trim and the forward door jamb area where the hinge attaches, the similarity becomes more apparent. You do have to mentally subtract the effect of the paint gloss when evaluating the hue.

I am not an expert at matching colors but I have been told that matching different shades of red (in particular) can be very tricky.

My other concern with red on red was that when I saw the backseat of a coral red car, it was a lot of red to hit me all at once. Sitting in the driver's seat and looking forward at the front part of the cabin it looked great. However, looking into the backseat area with the red being solid upper and lower, I asked myself if it was too much red. That would be particularly concerning on a red on red car.

Google "red interior car" and then select "images". Note the long history of this color application, including Porsche, Maserati, etc. Ultimately, if depends if you like it, but it should not be discounted, per se.

Also check the modern line 228 thread if you haven't already. The oyster looks pretty damn sharp with black carpets. This all comes down to what you like though, it's your car. I want midnight blue with terra but that's not possible right now, so played it safe w grey and black.

Yep. I wish the oyster with black carpets was available on the m235. Looks good. Maybe they will add it for 2015. Or even Ventian Beige. BMW are you listening?

I like it! Maybe BMW will add for MY2015 in the m235i. How do you think the Oyster seats will handle jeans? My CA warned me about that.

I think its the new jeans you need to watch out for.

Once I had a pair of new jeans it got my beige leather seats in our media room dirty! We have an Oyster X3, and it looks good as new. As long as you keep it clean
