2018 Instrument Cluster - mph to kmh

Hey all, I'll be taking a road trip into Canada from the US, this summer, and am wondering if the speedometer in the 2018 model will automatically switch from MPH to KMH? Does the car use GPS to detect that you have crossed into a metricated country?

Isn't that your excuse to just go 50 MPH everywhere until they help you do the conversion ? But more seriously, doesn't your speedo have both on the face - Unless I'm having one of those implanted memory moments, I could swear mine has both. Otherwise, I think you have to reset the units in one of the personal settings menus on your own.

My 230i only has MPH. Don't know how to change it. Does make the speedo less cluttered, but I miss the old school fonts & numbers aren't red @ night.

You go to idrive settings and there is a section for units

Now I'm going to have to go out and check mine - was I confabulating from a past car, or did they decide that it was no longer necessary? Perhaps just one more sign that the USA is trying to divorce itself from the entire rest of the civilized world?

I don't understand why US still uses miles instead of kilometres like the rest of the world, the British who invented the imperial unit don't even use it anymore

You can change the units from miles to kilometers in idrive.
That won't change the speedometer. I'll read MPH.
It will change the digital readouts: your odometer, trip odometer, remaining range, etc.
If you want to see your speed in KPH you'll have to code the car to display the digital speedo.

What's the problem? You can't calculate 65 MPH X 1.61 into your head? Come on!

But, don't think there is a way to change the speedometer from MPH to KPH...only the trip mileage, etc.

There are two kinds of countries:

1. Countries that use the metric system
2. Countries that put a man on the moon

Not true. US, UK, and Australia use miles. And the US does it because they inherited it from the UK. Just like Australia.

Australia changed to km/h on the roads in 1974. The UK is a mix, petrol is sold in litres and most other goods in supermarkets are listed in both kg and pounds.

Many organisations in the US (NASA, computer manufacturers, major car manufacturers) have all converted to metric components such as fasteners, engineering drawings, etc. IBM was all metric across the worldwide organisation when I worked for them in 1982.

NASA had their famous 1999 Mars probe issue when they mixed up imperial and metric measurements, all good now they are substantially metric.

I stand corrected, my sources were bad. But we're talking mph and kph not the whole metric system for measurements because it just makes more sense.

Could be worse. Puerto Rico uses mph for speed and km for distance markers on the highways. Confused the heck out of me how I came up on an exit as fast as I did at 60mph until I realized that the sign was only 1/2km away, not 1/2 mile...

Hmmm, I'm pretty sure we use Kilometers here, my speedo only shows kph.

Shout out to Liberia and Myanmar, also metric-free (at least for now)! ;-)

You will need digital speedomoter activated thru coding and then this digital speedometer will be able to change between MPH and KPH.

You should ask NASA if they used metric or imperial for the Apollo missions
