Brief vibration ~20 seconds after M240i start?
I've got a new-to-me 2017 M240i. I'm noticing after a cold start, while I'm fiddling with music and sorta letting the engine warm up (I know you don't need a long warmup), I feel this vibration for ~1 second and occurs about 20 seconds after startup, then it goes away. It's pretty mild, but feels like something maybe temporarily off balance in the engine. This occurs before I've ever shifted out of park.
The car drives fine otherwise, and I don't notice this if I, say, park it for 1-2hr and start it up. It seems to be only after a dead cold start and/or several hours of non-use. Is this either a known issue, or a non-issue, or an issue that can be figured out with the given info? |

from reading a post, non-issue. As the cars adjust to a idle it passes through a period of vibration - whether a knock sensor adjust it away or if it's an imbalance transferred through the crank and engine mounts due to the parameters of the ignition or even oil flow or accessory like a water-pump or A/C coming on line - I don't know, but if it settle into a comfortable idle then it's fine. Cold starts are different then a warm engine start.

From day 1, on cold start there was an odd "vibration" as cold idle dropped to normal. A software update corrected that, but then there was a more disturbing cold start and drive-off hesitation with light part throttle. As the cold engine idles fine, I shift to D and apply light throttle, the car moves a wee bit and then a BIG hesitation in the engine, as if it's choking, and quickly takes off normally. That hesitation has been with me since I received my 2016 in Sept. 2015. I recently took my 340i in for its' yearly maintenance, and there was an in-house/BMW "recall" to reprogram the ECU. At least that is what the service writer told me. Basically, BMW has updated software, and it FIXED the odd hesitation! Awesome! The cold start idle is not smoother and feels more solid. The best part is that the cold start drive off hesitation is gone. That confirms that BMW engineers knew about this problem as obviously they have finally corrected it. When I first brought the issue to the service department, the next day after I picked it up, of course they knew nothing and had no answer as the B58 3.0 engine was new in the 2016 LCI 3 series. Take it in to your BMW service department and have them check the ECU programming to make sure it's up to date. If it is, then they'll need to find the issue and/or report it to BMW. |

Hey thanks a lot, very useful answer as my dealer didn't seem too informed (just bought it so I went to him instead of service initially). I'll go to service with this exact question/recommendation and see what happens.

When I took ownership of my m235i brand new from the dealer with about 15km on the dash, during the first start up I do notice some strange vibrating sensation of the entire vehicle. It felt as though it is trying to clean out the pistons by odd mis-firing or a knock-sensor kicking as the engine is new and needs to break in. The feeling was very noticeable when the car was new up unto about the 3000km mark. Every time my car starts up now I don't feel it anymore except for those odd time. I've been fueling octane 93 from the get go. I did do an non-scheduled (paid) oil change with BMW at the 2500km mark maybe the fresh oil also cleared things up?
Or maybe the owner of the car is just delusional. Who knows.
